REFERENCE: 2019+ Power Wagon Armor

I think there’s some confusion here on the rear ends. The 19+ non-PW trucks all get the 12” axle, but only the HO Cummins actually has 12” gears. The rest are just using the bigger housing.

PWs with the locker (‘19-22 at least) have used the actual 11.5” housing. Sounds like this may have changed for ‘23.

Here’s a 2020 PW rear axle, which looks different than @Shocktrooper392’s axle:

jsalbre is that your truck...looks like I could eat breakfast off any part off the bottom.

Hah! No, that’s a review photo from Motortrend. I picked that one because it was clean and super easy to see.

Here’s a picture that shows my rear axle from the day the truck delivered though. You can again see the differences between it and the 2020 PW axle.

Nowadays it’s far more red and brown from dirt than black.

Edit: Just a thought, but they may have changed the axle due to the release of the Rebel. Perhaps the old housing wasn’t up to the towing requirements they set for the Rebel, so they changed it out.

Well, I'm really really hoping that this is not true, and the the 2500s don't actually have the 12" axle, because I literally just ordered the Ruff Stuff diff covers, and the rear I ordered is the 11.5" per my understanding of the axle and theirs too. Sounds like that may be not true.

‘23 and I assume ‘24 PW/Rebels definitely have the 12” housing.

Has anyone tried any ASFIR4x4 skids? Everything list is for diesel trucks but I would think their rock sliders and some other stuff should work with minimal modification if any.

Yeah that axle looks a bit different than previous years . Spec sheet still says 11.5” though.

I recall in 2019 they changed something with the rear axle vs 2018 models EXCEPT Power Wagons…I want to say it was still the 11.5 but different housing. Maybe they finally just added the locker to the new housing for the Rebel and streamlined things by switching the PW to that as well.

I wonder if this updated PW rear axle can be used in a 2019-2022 Ram 2500?

Another option would be swapping this newer selectable locker into my rear axle.

It’s still the 11.5” ring gear, just the 12” housing.

That "updated power wagon" axle looks identical to the axle under my 2500 Cummins truck.

(Forgive the poor lighting and all, did this the other night)

So it appears that my 2019 2500 4x4 Cummins truck has the 12" rear axle. I am beyond surprised that they are using the 12" housing with 11.5" gearing, it doesn't make sense to me but perhaps the reason is to keep the LSD? Who knows. I am annoyed since my RuffStuff diff cover literally just came in.

All 2019-2022 HDs with the exception of the PW have the 12” housing, but only the HO Cummins have the 12” gears. 2019-2022 PWs have the old 11.5” housing. 2023-2024 PWs also now have the 12” housing, but like the rest still retain 11.5” gears.

My assumption is that the locker in 2019-22 didn’t fit in the 12” housing. Whether they changed the locker to fit the housing or the housing to fit the locker for 23-24 in not quite sure of yet.

Here’s a pic of my 21’s housing for reference.

Any benefit to the 12” housing if it still has the 11.5” gears? (Other than production line/purchasing being streamlined). The 11.5” rear is already pretty beefy. Is the 12” even worse for ground clearance?

I wish I could say, but I really don’t know. If I had to guess I’d say you’re probably right.

Regardless of which differential I think we can all agree they're freaking beefy. I was under a 2nd gen the other day and it looked tiny in comparison.

Is it just my eyes but do the PW rear diffs appear to have more robust gussets?

I think it’s just that the actual “round” portion of the diff housing isn’t as wide on the “old” axle. If you compare the two there’s more distance between the spring mount and the diff cover on the older axle.

So positive update regarding PC rear RG. I got the replacement 12" AAM rear rock guard in on Friday, went and put it on this morning.
Fits perfectly!...
purple cranium rear 12in rock guard installed.jpg

However, when I removed the factory bolts (mind you this is the second time they have been out) the lowest center and the lowest on the drivers side started to let gear oil leak out - no through the bolt holes but through the bottom of the cover.
Only a few drops, but I quickly got the RG mounted up, and actually started threading the lowest bolts first hand tight to try to get the dripping to stop. Then went back with the allen key and criss-cross tightened them down. This is what it looked like before I wiped it off:
PC RG rear axle drip-seep-weep.jpg
Took it for a 30 minute drive after wiping it off. Unfortunately it is still ever so slightly seeping out at the bottom. Has anyone else ran into this? Should I just keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if it keeps seeping out?
I did not put locktite on the new bolts when I put them in, but I did that with my front RG and it was fine, still tight, no drips or seeping.
Is it possible I snagged the rubber gasket with one of the bolts when I put them back in when messing with the 11.5" RG? If I did, I would think it would've been seeping after that if that was the case.
Also, I did this rear RG when the axle was completely cold this morning, whereas the front RG and the incorrect 11.5 rear RG attempt was done when the axles were slightly warm, at the time I had just driven it like 20-30 minutes prior.
Any suggestions?

Would bet that it stops, probably just residual.
