Rear air vents in jump seat

I have an issue with airflow coming from the vents in the back of the center jump seat. They appear to be not functioning, the vents under the driver and passenger seats work though and move a ton of air. I was waiting for a recall or something else to pop up before I took it in since there are still functioning vents in the rear. It went in today, 3/20, to get looked at and have the VB6 and W03 recalls completed.

Got the truck back and the notes said the infamous "functioning as designed". Tech tech stated that they held a lighter in front of the vents and the flame moved a little bit, they also closed all of the front vents and said they were able to get more air flow out of these two rear ones. I am already working with Mark of RamCares, but wanted to throw this out there to see if everyone else's is the same.

Would anyone with a crew cab and split bench front seat (center jump seat) be able to check the airflow coming out of their jump seat vents? Just a "by hand" feel would be good enough for me. Also, does your airflow change when changing the fan speed? Thanks in advance!

Ask the tech to show you the "lighter flame" procedure in the service manual. I thought so. Those vents (with bench seat or centre console) should provide good airflow. The 4th gens are similar. If the HVAC works fine up front, I'd be wondering if they're connected properly or obstructed.

My 4th gens with buckets never threw much air and my new one with bench seems about the same. If they can put fans in your arse why can’t they put one in the duct for the back of the cabin! Maybe I should have been a engineer.

That was exactly my thoughts on airflow, if the front is good, the back should be ok. I understand it will be less when fronts are all open, but it was a minimal change when I closed all the front vents and put the fan on high. Very minimal airflow, hardly felt in the center vents (like if you weren't trying to feel for it, you wouldn't feel it), the vents under the driver and passenger seats were blowing nice and hard. Something seems to be obstructed or not connected properly.

I didn't expect airflow as good as the front, but I did expect something out of those vents. If nothing is coming out and they are "Working as Designed", why even put them in?

I have a '19 2500 Big Horn, I can check my rear vent flow tomorrow afternoon. Hoping it puts out some good air (I have 3 kiddos).

Please be sure to keep us updated, @Vapor567. We are just a PM away if any additional support is needed.

Looking forward to your results Vapor! Thanks for helping a guy out!

OP, check

Checked mine, has plenty of flow with the fan on about 3/4 speed. That is with just the up (person symbol, not the feet selected) which surprised me as I thought I'd have to turn the feet vents on. I believe my recirculation was not on so not sure if those things would effect it. I can give you a picture tomorrow with a piece of paper blowing it over. I'm thinking like you said there's an obstruction?

Thanks Vapor! I had a feeling thats the way it was supposed to be. Now if only I could get my local dealer to call me back with a new appointment date to look at this again.

Mine is a 6.4, would be curious if another owner with the diesel could report, maybe there's a difference?

I got this fixed on my own last night. Right under the little tray in front of the jump seat is a joint in the hvac ducting. When the ducting was pushed together, a "tab" of carpet was pulled into the ducting and blocked the airflow. I found this when I removed the little tray to install my Husky hump mat. I was on a time constraint to install the mat so I forgot to take pics of the blocked duct. I will try to remember pics when i take it back apart to get the duct clipped together.

I was gonna say airflow is perfectly strong back there so have the techs actually do something... but then you did their job for them!

Makes you wonder - if they say airflow with a carpet-blocker duct is normal, what else is “normal?”

My 2020 2500 has the same issue, weak airflow. Was thinking about having it looked at.

Dont waste your time having the dealer look at it. Just unscrew and pull up that little tray in front of the jump seat. Thats where there is a connection in the ducting. My carpet was tucked in betwen the 2 pieces of duct.

Appreciate your suggestion., I'll pull it myself.
I’ve been dealing with low air flow for 5 years.
Just didn’t have anything to compare to. Thought it was just a bad design
This was a life saver

So I didn’t have carpet stuck

HOWEVER, if you see my picture the duct came loose, you can see the tab isn’t engaged. Once i engaged it, the air flow wasn’t great but it was much better
