Radio Flash Question

Can someone tell me how long it takes the dealer to flash new radio software version? I took the truck in this morning because Uconnect states my radio is two versions back and needs to be current so the navigation works correctly. The dealer wanted to charge me $462.00 to flash both updates! They claim one hour each, pretty sure that's BS as I did it on my 2017 myself and it was done under 30 minutes easily. The worst part is two months ago they quoted me $200 for the same work! Calling the general manager when he decides to come to work at 10AM.

The underlying issue really is that the truck has never done an OTA download, even though it is supposed to yet they claim no foul on their part.

Unless you have an issue with navigation or the radio, I wouldn't bother with an update. Besides, that is a rediculous amount of money for something that they would just start the download and walk away until it is done. They make it sound like they have to sit there and baby sit the download.

Exactly. Unfortunately the nav no longer functions correctly due to the software being that far back, at least that's what Uconnect claims.

Takes about 20 min. Go to RAM and buy it. I want to say I paid about $100 for the update. But now, NAV sucks. She can't understand a word I say. And I have to be stopped to type it in.

According to Uconnect you can't self load the 2020+ via USB, at least that's what they told me.

So this is going to be a somewhat long convoluted update but bears repeating in case someone else runs into this.

This whole scenario started almost a year ago now when my Navigation suddenly stopped working, well almost. It would let me route back home but nowhere else, simply stated "We've encountered an error". So it was working, sort of. Of coincidence the exact same day my SiriusXM Guardian subscription expired. Naturally I called SiriusXM Guardian but they claimed that does not affect the navigation but to call Uconnect. Called Uconnect and they could not find any reason and told me to take it to the dealer. Calls went back and forth until Uconnect finally told me I needed updated software flashed. Called the local dealer and stated $200 gets it done.

Fast forward a month ago when I revisited this issue, just been too busy to pursue it. Started by calling Uconnect and asking about the OTA not functioning and that's where they stated again I'm behind in software versions which is the reason my NAV isn't working, stated I needed to flash the latest versions. I called BS on that but as an IT professional I also know anything is possible when older versions age out. Called the dealer and grudgingly made the appointment. Now we are up to date and still waiting for the dealers general manager to call, probably won't unless I initiate it again.

I've been fuming about this since yesterday morning so decided to call Uconnect again with some questions. I asked specifically what initiates the OTA updates? Couldn't answer. I asked if it's possible to do a USB flash on the 2020+ models, would not give a yes or no, take it to the dealer is all i got. I asked why their website states my truck software is up to date, she stated that's because it is. Wait one minute, you just stated i was behind in software versions make up your mind. Now she's getting testy and stated maybe your truck needs diagnostics to which I stated now you want me to spend more money? Said no thanks and hung up.

Started browsing the Uconnect site and found something interesting that made me stop and think suddenly while reading the FAQs;
"Can my vehicle receive over-the-air software updates?
If your vehicle is equipped with built-in Uconnect® Access( Disclosure51) or SiriusXM Guardian™( Disclosure25) connected services, you may receive over-the-air software updates. Vehicles with Uconnect Access have a 9-1-1 button( Disclosure52) and an Assist button located on or near the rearview mirror; vehicles with SiriusXM Guardian have an SOS button( Disclosure7) and an Assist button located on or near the rearview mirror. Vehicles must be located in the US and in range of a useable cellular network.", Checked the year and models of approved vehicles and mine is there.

Suddenly I stopped, remembering the whole thing started when my SiriusXM Guardian subscription expired. That got me thinking if OTA is connected to that then re-enabling should correct it and all things being good I should get OTA. Ok called SiriusXM Guardian and got a promo 6 month all included for $60, worth it to me to see what happens. Verified the services were re-enabled by starting truck and unlocking from phone. Go in truck and guess what? The NAV now works exactly as it did before! So it is total BS that the NAV is not dependent on SiriusXM Guardian, remember I had specifically asked them what they did and they denied the entire thing. Well that's BS because after searching I did find some enhanced navigation packages, so they are connected somehow. Now I'm contemplating pushing this issue further, well see where it goes.

Interesting.
I did renew my Sirus XM so we can have radio. Didn't get anything else.
I think mine has updated once over air in the 4 years I've owned it. Ordered it brand new.
The update I bought was for the NAV. I don't think it updated anything else.

I don't use the truck's nav. Waze has been reliable, and the app's ability to get real-time traffic updates is pretty nice. Thanks for the informative update on your findings @Razzman.

Well this just keeps getting better, off to the dealer to shove this in their face. They did absolutely no research at all when I asked about a warranty flash.

No surprise there. Very few know much of anything nowadays.
When I went to order my Power Wagon, sales manager had no idea what I was talking about. Told him you don't have any on the lot, that's why im ordering on.

Update: Went to dealer though with that letter and the service advisor i got was really cool and knew all about it but said he can't honor that as it was a mopar issued deal, whatever. But he said would do all the flashes for one hour labor. Ok. Took it back yesterday and dropped it off at 7AM, came back at 5PM and they were still doing it, the last version download was corrupting on every download and they were having issues. Asked if I wanted to wait, yeah. Finally got it done at 6:30PM, they closed at 6PM. Service manager said no charge because they had to do so many updates to get up to current version and because I had to wait so long and it was their issue. So in the end it worked out, but I don't know if I'll get OTA or not in the future.

This has been informative.

I have a non-nav 8.4 and occasionally (twice a year?) it will tell me to wait (I forget the exact verbiage) and it will have a … loading screen for many minutes until it reboots and I always assumed it was receiving an update during that time. According to this information my truck shouldn’t be updating over the air.

No issues with the Uconnect ever except for that occasional loading screen but thanks for sharing

So it is and isn't. If you select "Where To" and follow the long process of entering your state, city, street name, and street number, NAV works without Guardian. If you want to use the convenient search bar from the main Nav page, you need Guardian. I think you also need it for the a lot of the other features as well...At least this is what I'm assuming from my testing. I do not have Guardian (bought the truck used last year and its a 21), search function always comes back with nothing, then it tries offline which also produces nothing, but the long way works.

In my case that didn't work. Tried it multiple times.

Well that explains a lot. Dealer said there was a TSB and my radio SW is 39.9.0 despite their access to Uconnect saying it was up-to-date. Dealer said that I should be able to get OTA via wifi but that has never worked since the day I purchased it and wasn't connected to Sirius or Guardian whichever I have (Uconnect told me both). 4 hours of driving to get it updated but I guess I'll byte the bullet. Android auto on the 12" display sucks. All this started with expiration of Sirius which is supposed to be separate from the OTA capability. Guess not.
