Paint chips question

For folks that have the sport appearance group, how have the front ends been holding up to rock chips? I know in previous generations the painted front bumpers could get beat up pretty quick so just wondering if that's better now.
 
2500 miles and 1 small chip
I’ll get a paint pen and cal it good

I mean personally do what ever additional protection you want and it won’t hurt.

I haven’t done anything and I have a feeling I won’t. A paint pen is a lot cheaper.

Not to mention some of these films they put still show the impact but arguably do protect the paint.....still looks bad after 100k either way lol. The benefit is you can change a cover and film cheaper than you can paint match a bumper after 5-8 years of heavy use.

Know this post is old, but my PPF is glorious. I have the whole hood/fenders/door jams/headlights/fog lights/front bumper done. Way too many rock issues in Wyoming and driving into CO. 50 mph winds and 80 mph tractor/trailers are not a good combo.
 
Depends on where you live/drive.

Living in CO, I opted for chrome because of the rash we get. I could have applied PPF, but also figured I'd screw up the paint on the rear bumper too. Plus, aren't those plastic covers over a rar bumper? No thanks.

The painted bumper on my 03 Audi looks like hell.
 
I will say, I am noticing paint chips on edges, down to “white” from my granite crystal. I have PPF all over the front and I noticed a chip on the roof edge, top of front windshield and another one on the edge that goes around the passenger rear window. I bought a touch up pen like week one and using it already. I have mastered the touch up,2000/3000 wet sand and then polish technique, gets rid of the silly bump from touch up (do use a toothpick most of the time to apply). I am thinking of PPF all the way along the bottom rocker panel area, up to the “limited” chrome that runs the length of the cab. Kind of ridiculous I think...seems thin.
 
No, PPF has been a champ...can only imagine what it would look like without it...glad I did the whole hood and fenders...
 
About 15k on mine, painted bumpers are great. I did ceramic coat, so, may be that helped. I got side swiped by a kia and had scuffing that buffed out without paint damage. I do have a couple chips in my hood and one in the rear drivers side door (opposite side of where the incident occurred).
 
There is no way I won't apply PPF on mine when I get it.
There has been a change in the recent years to use less salt and use more abrasives on roads during winter. So, more paint damage :mad:
All my cars have been chipped. I'll start applying PPF to all my new vehicles from now on.

LOL. Just the opposite here in CO Used to be "sand" only, now they use Mag chloride that rots everything. Thankfully the body panels seem to hold up with modern coatings, but it takes its toll on clearcoat wheels and chromed plastic. Best to get a good wash including underbody ASAP after driving in the stuff. Can't tell you how many pieces of "sand" I've seen come flying at the windshield or hood on my car.
 
Yeah, it is more fine gravel than sand. So, a bit more aggressive on paint.

From an economic standpoint, salt damages is very costly. It was the primary cause of rotten bridges (or anything with reinforced concrete). Plus, defrosted ice would penetrate any cracks in the asphalt causing it to lift when refreezing back, etc...

So now, less cost for them and more chipped paint for us lol
