Getting ready to change my air filter and I always run a drip in K&N air filter in all of my vehicles. I like that I can clean them vs throwing them away. I noticed on my air box it says dry filters only. My truck is under warranty still so would it be foolish to go ahead and put the K&N in while I’m under warranty? Is there a reason they don’t want you using oiled filters on the 6.4 hemi or is it just one of those manufacturer thing’s trying to get you to purchase only their parts?

K&N filters have an awful reputation on this site - have you used them on this truck before? I would go with an OEM replacement if I were you. You can order from Geno's or other reputable online sellers for reasonable prices.

I'll second what @tchur1 said, K&N is junk and on these trucks OEM is best.

Oiled filters can cause a lot of problems letting dust and oil thru.

You won't find a better filter or CAI setup than what came stock, OEM air intakes have come a long ways.

Just to clarify as far as the intake itself I have no plans to ever remove or modify the factory air box/intake. I simply would like a reusable drop in air filter. I have never used a K&N on a 6.4, just in every truck I have owned prior to this truck which is mostly Fords and a couple Chevys also my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. Not saying that makes K&N ok, just saying.

I’m seeing two filter options, both state they are compatible and OEM. The black liner one is $48 and the orange lined one is $55 any suggestions and are those prices reasonable or can I do better on another site?

I believe the orange one is the one you want. Pretty sure the 685 is for the cummins.

Either filter can fit the 19+ Hemi, but the 68517554AA is for 07.5-18 6.7L Cummins or 19+ Hemi's. The AB filter (orange) is good for all 6.7 engines and years.

You may be correct but everything I've read says not to use the black filter in 2019+. The orange came from factory in the 2019+, haven't read anything saying it's okay in pre 2019+

The orange (AB) has been used in the 6.7 since 2007, and is still the current factory filter. It’s suppposed to be used in the 19+ 6.7’s.

The white (AA) filter was released a couple years ago and was supposed to superceede the AB filter, but the 19+ 6.7’s don’t like it. 19+ Hemi’s are supposed to use the AA filter per Ram. Pre 19 6.7’s are also recommended to use the AA filter, but either AA or AB will work.

It's been proven over and over that K&N oiled filters pass particles that dry filters catch. It's OK to use them but you are subjecting the engine to long term wear damage. There are reusable dry filters that are acceptable. The negatives on reusables is their initial and maintenance cost, as they require periodic cleaning with a recommended cleaner. The OEM filter has excellent filtration, lasts a long time, and is reasonably priced.

Perfect explanation, thanks

I think you and I have a different opinion of what reasonably priced means. The dealership charges $77 for the OEM air filter. That is exactly why I WAS wanting to put a K&N in as I have had them in all my vehicles and most of my motorcycles. The k&n is $119 and I never have to buy another filter again. Maintenance costs would probably total I’d guess $30 for the life of the filter. When I clean them I stick them in a Home Depot bucket of warm water and dawn dish soap. I do oil them with a filter oil but that stuff lasts a long time. Anyways, I need to find out where I can get factory filters at a reasonable price. I appreciate all the feedback from everyone.

Factory filters are cheap on Amazon.

K&N air filters are barely filters. They’re fine for a drag car, but anything that has the potential of seeing dirt is going to suffer long term from their use. There’s no doubt that they flow more air, but in order to do so they have to allow more dirt through.

The air filter on these engines is sized for the Cummins, which needs far more air than the Hemi. There’s no need for any additional air flow.

The last Mopar air filter I bought was 30.00. I stand by a K&N oiled filter being a poor choice
Do what you feel is best for you - to each his own

I’m not looking for additional air flow, was just looking for the reusable factor as it’s much cheaper. I didn’t realize the 6.4 hemi was so susceptible to whatever May or may not pass through a k&n. I have 380,000 on my 97 z71, 150,000 on my F150, 90,000 on my Hyundai Santa Fe and I’ve never had an issue or a CEL or anything. This is my first ram though, I’m sure I have a lot to learn. I’ll keep checking Amazon for filters. Thanks again for all the info. I’ll definitely run mopar filters. I found them on a website for $55 which I still thought was outrageous for a throw away but I guess it is what it is.

Use caution on amazon or eBay with filter purchases. Lots of counterfeit on there.

On your high mileage vehicles with a k@n, it would be interesting if you wiped post air filter with a clean rag and saw if any dirt was accumulated

Buying a counterfeit filter is definitely a concern. I actually stopped at the dealer yesterday and bought a filter from them along with 4 more oil filters. The oil filters were actually a good price, in my opinion. They wet $8.50 a piece, granted they are tiny little filters, I was shocked how small these filters are. I get the pennzoil 0-40 ultra platinum full synthetic on Amazon for $45 for 6 quarts, I have 5 cases right now. I’m not quite following you in the wiped post air filter part. Wiped the air box? Post air filter? You mean after I clean it? As far as the filter you can always see the accumulated dirt and occasional debris like a bee or bug.

The tube or hose going into the engine from the air filter box. Should confirm or dispel the k&n let’s dirt past the air filter concern. Ideally there should be no film whatsoever.

I had an AEM dryflow filter in my wife's Impreza once. Had the intake off once to clean the throttle body and couldn't believe how much fine dust was coating the inside of the intake tubing. It all got cleaned and that filter went straight in the trash where it belongs. OEM is best.
