Oil Thread - 6.4 Hemi

ah yes if the quality brands aren’t good then Walmart brand will certainly be the ticket
You might want to see The Motor Oil Geek's comparison of oils before you knock Supertech .Both that and NAPA brands did better than some of your " quality" oils!

In fact Super tech is rated API SP ,
most brand name oils in that Viscosity are only rated SN. BTW. If anyone cares the SRT filters only carry a 61 rating for filtration. That means they'll filter down to 27 microns at 98%. The cheaper Champ XL filters down to 20 microns at 99% . Both good filters but the SRT also has a higher pressure by pass differential. If you're doing frequent oil changes like me that doesn't matter.

Yeah I believe the Supertech oils are distributed by Warren, and Warren has been doing it for a century. In all the testing I've seen, the Supertech oils have outperformed most name brands.

A lot of the good filters have a better pressure relief valve and anti drainback valve, one thing I have seen with the off brand oils is the protection against shear as they get mileage on them, they protect great at first, but at 5k they are not good, oil analysis.

I believe these would be the choices...

PuP
Valvoline
AMSOil
Schaeffer's
Red Line
Ravenol
The Amsoil Signature series does not have the API Donut seal and is not approved by MOPAR for use in Ram Trucks.

im no amsoil fanboi but that just means they didn’t pay for the seal. That being said, PUP is cheaper and works great.

Just did my first change @ 2331 miles on my 2500 with PUP and Champ filter. ( I would have done it at 500 miles had I gotten the truck sooner) . I'll change it out with filter every couple of thousand and have the oil analysis done until I 'm confident the breakin is done.then every 4k with filter from there. I'll stick with PUP during the warranty period unless a better oil acknowledged by Mopar comes along.

I've ran Red Line for years. They came out with the Professional series a couple years ago that is API certified. Good oil.

Have not read all the pages but have any of you looked at the the Fleetguard LF16002 oil filter? Its a bit spendy but its a quality 25 micron @100% efficiency, its flow rate is 20L/m if you buy direct from Fleetguard its $25.42 with free shipping if you by more than $75.00 but you can get the cost down to $18.74 if ya buy a case of 12 not sure of shipping cost see URL below. More filter info here: https://shop.cummins.com/SC/product/fleetguard-lube-filter-lf16002/01t4N0000048ooFQAQ copy of the PDF here: https://www.fleetguard.com/s/productDetails?propertyVal=LF16002&propertyField=home&language=en_US Use this URL for buy by the case: https://fleet-reliable-filters.com/fleetguard-lf16002-pac-lf.html If I still owned a gas engine vehicle I would not hesitate to use this oil filter.

The wix 57060xp is cheap and outperforms it, I believe. Correct me if I am misguided

Wix 57060
21 microns
10-12 gpm (38lpm) flow rate

One of the problems I see with Wix is who will be making their filters six months from now with Fleetguard I would not worry and I'm waiting to find out if that filter is a Stratapore if so that makes it that much better, also see they list as Nominal Micron Rating of 21 and IIRC that means its efficiency rating is at best 98.x % efficient, my self will trust the Fleetguard over Wix, with Wix ya never know whose making it or if the media rating has changed without you knowing... jmho

Nominal means anything less that 98.7% (which is absolute) and is often reported at 50% but their is no standard.

Not a big wix fan myself, but have them on the 6.4 because the preponderance of data shows them to be one of the best filters for the application.

The 57060 and 57060XP are different filters. Wix doesn’t publish XP filtration efficiency but I’ve read it’s a 35µ filter.

The 57060 is reported as 2/20=6/20 which translates to 6µ at 50% and 20µ at 95%. Not bad for the price.

Coming up on my first oil change ever for my 2500 and what i have found after reading every single post on all 15 pages of this thread was this thread was zero help at all :D:D (laughing), there is no "correct/best/right" answer. Its seems everyone uses different filters, oil brands, and oil weights. So in other words... just do what works for you as long as it meets the spec. lol

Same story whether it be Oil. Filter. Tires. Mufflers. Everybody thinks what they run is best.

Just to add a data point here I got a ”dry start” the other day and I am at 20% remaining on my oil life.
I’ve had good luck with the wix xp getting me to the full OCI but this one seems to be draining back.
I’ll be changing the oil and filter this weekend

As long as everyone is throwing their two cents in, I use ChampXL filters which are 99% efficient down to 20 microns. Champ makes a HUGE amount of the filters out there including quite a few OEMs . You can get them from Rockauto delivered dirt cheap and if your changing your filter with your oil every 5k miles there isn't a better buy out there.

While it’s under warranty, just use the MOPAR filter and any 0w-40 that has SN rating and the API donut seal.

Here is what my 2024 owner's manual says for the Hemi oil:
"We recommend using Mopar® API Certified SAE 0W-40 Full Synthetic Engine Oil
which meets the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS-A0921.
Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-40 engine oil can be used but must have the API
Donut trademark"

The only oils I've found that are certified to MS-A0921 are Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Mopar 0W-40. There are boutique oils (AMSOIL, Redline, etc.) that claim to meet the requirements of MS-A0921 but don't have the API Donut trademark.

It is unclear to me what the statement "Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-40 engine oil can be used but must have the API Donut trademark". Does that mean the oil has to be equivalent to MS-A0921? There are a lot of API donut trademarks for gasoline engines but not all are acceptable for use in a modern Hemi. From my research you at least need an API SN+ or SP oil. My understanding is MS-A0921 is basically an API SP oil with specific additives and tighter limits on certain characteristics that FCA deemed important for their engines.

I'll probably use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40 for my oil changes unless other oils come out that meet the recommendations in the owner's manual, at least until my warranty is up.
