Oil Thread - 6.4 Hemi

Oil change day

7.5qt of Redline 0w40 and a Ford Racing Filter....I know it sounds crazy, but the fl820 is the size/rating the 6.4 hemi in the cars calls for. There is a SRT filter available, but it's made in Poland. Went with the Ford racing that's Made in USA. Plenty of room for the big filter, if you like Fram filters the XG2 is probably the best option there. I think the Ford racing edges out all the others in this size. The "long" version of the factory filter is also a great choice, a lot of ram 1500 guys using it. If you research it the fl820 size ia difficult to install on the 1500s. So they have settled for the long filter. This was the standard size for all hemis at one time. In my opinion Ram cheaped out and made all the trucks use the tiny filter to save money.

I look forward to your opinions on a Ford filter on a Ram haha.

Man that's bad karma in my book.

Send it. There is a big motorcraft filter that fits on 4.0 jeeps, too.

So I got my oil changed and tires rotated at the dealer...$130.00

I will be changing it myself from here on out, probably stick with Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 0W-40 and a mopar filter. Anyone know what this should cost for oil and filter?
$13 for Mopar filter, hit Walmart for cheapest full synthetic oil aprox $24. Have cold start ticker until oil gets to em. Curious to good solution

6K Mile update on my above Redline and Ford Racing filter. Changed the oil last weekend. Had 6000 miles on the oil/filter and zero start-up tick from the Ford filter. I put the same on/in the truck this time. The truck has 15K on it now.

Who makes Federated Auto Parts oil filters?

I've had 1 oil change so far on my truck and it was done by RAM at the dealership. It cost me $99 plus tax. For some reason they now want to charge more. So I thought I'd just start doing the changes myself. PuP and mopar filter $65.25 on Amazon isn't bad.

I decided to crawl under the truck to see what oil filter the dealer used and to my surprise it's a Federated Auto Parts PG2222F filter. I was expecting to see Mopar.

Copy this into google and you’ll find out it’s Hastings

Yeah, I'm not familiar with Hastings.

I find it interesting how many folks discuss oil types and the filters in detail, almost stressing over these things. Then the dealership service department slaps an off-brand filter in there like it's no big deal. While getting things done at the dealership is nice for record keeping, it doesn't ensure they're using OEM products.

It's pretty common for manufacturers to have several suppliers of common use products, like oil and air filters. Helps avoid supply constraints. While it may not say "Mopar" on the filter I doubt a dealer is using something that isn't OEM approved.

If you have a concern you should inquire with the dealer that performed the service.

Did my own this time around, PUP and Purolator BOSS filter. Quick process, the filter was really easy to get to compared to some of my older vehicles. I saved around $40 by doing it myself plus the cost of time driving to the dealership, waiting, etc. I'd say it's worth the savings.

I understand the desire to use the best products and agree I'd rather have a better performing oil/filter than what is oem approved.

It seems the only way to ensure that is to do this ourselves. As previously mentioned, the dealership will use whatever matches the standard. Why settle for "just good enough" when there are better performing products out there. I guess the debate will always go on as to which ones are good, better, best but that ok and keeps things interesting.

I will say (maybe it's just my imagination. lol) my truck feels happy to have a fresh pan full of oil.

I have no issue changing oil but I’m trying to get the most out of my transcraps with rotations every oil change. Rotating tires at my house sucks at least for the foreseeable feature so therefore I buy oil and rotation packages at the dealership. They claim to use PUP and I’ve had Mopar filters every time.
