Hi all. I have a 2022 ram 2500 6.7L. I’m about to do my first oil change and curious what you guys are using for a oil filter wrench. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos and seems like it can be a pain with limited room trying to replace the filter. Also how many of you are notching out the firewall, that is the main thing I’m hoping I can avoid.
Thanks in advance for your information.

I bought a bottom cup one and hate using it.

My old tied and true metal strap wrench has never failed me. I've a rubber one too if it comes to that, but I'm the one putting the filters on so it's not needed.

Also get yourself the screw in cap t-handle and if needed, a gallon ziplock.

Thank you. Already have the T-handle screw in plug. What year is your truck and did you notch out the fire wall. Also do you know what size your filter wrench is

The oil filter is nowhere near the firewall. I have seen some that make a small notch in the plastic inner fender, on the passenger side, to allow a little more access to the filter. It isn't really needed though.

I just used these vice grips. They’re short easy to get in factory Oil filters are on super tight. Tried 5 different oil filter devices to remove no problem with these and a Ziploc bag.

My passenger wheel well splash guard is notched from the factory to access the filter. I assume they all are, there is just enough room to squeeze in there above the tire.
Be for warned, they have a gorilla tighten on the factory oil filter. Be ready for a fight!

My 19 was not over tight but honestly just a nitrile glove usually gives me enough grip to take it off by hand, but as brutal has shown that wrench works very well

You should already have a large cutout in the fender well liner. I can plainly see the filter (with date written on it in sharpie) standing next to the truck. :-)

I use this one with a standard 3/8' rachet - just enough clearance to get it in there (I also take off the front passenger wheel to make the filter change much easier) - https://www.genosgarage.com/product/lc61580/tools
I typically do as-well since i use that time to rotate the tires, and bonus you can lower the truck much further to the ground with the wheels off to fill oil and change the front fuel filter when using a hoist

yup, I combine tire rotation with oil change as well. However, I just learned that the tire center right down the road from me does free tire rotations even if you don't buy the tires from them - may have to start using them as I am getting tired of putting the entire truck up on jack stands just to do a tire rotation.

exactly what I use through the fender well. works great. I also mark the end of the new filter with numbers 1 to 4, 90 degrees apart so I know when I have tightened it by 3/4 turn.

just did oil and filter change yesterday. I may not have the oil filter tight enough. didn't need a filter wrench at all.

On my last oil change, it seemed a little easier to snuggle in for access with the front tires turned a bit to the left.

I use the wrench Brutal posted and it’s all I’ve ever used. If you get one the gorilla has had ahold of, you can go in from the top with a strap type wrench and it will remove it. With the difference in the position of the turbo on the newer trucks, vs the 18’ I had, there seems to be a lot more room going in from the top on my 22’.

The Donaldson DBL7349 is one of the best oil filters compatible with our trucks. I use the Amsoil EAO80 which is the Donaldson DBL7349 but made with a fluted end. I combine that with a 93mm fluted filter wrench and a long 18" X 3/8" drive. Taking the filter off through the wheel well is a piece of cake. Don't forget to also grab a filter plug so you can turn the filter sideways while removing it and not make a mess.

I go in from the top. Is so much easier for me.
