Noob 6.4L Hemi owner so I'm redredging the "best oil filter" question so started "back of napkining" a few things.
Couple of 2024/25 videos have shown the Purolator Boss as the current best filtration/flow filters (excellent flow at 98% 20 micron capture). Also interestingly the recommended Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40 is ranked as the very best oil.
For the RAM 2500 6.4 Hemi direct part number replacement is the:
- 6.4 Hemi: PBL12222 - Bypass Valve at 12-15, Height 3.340", OD 2.950" (Canister volume of 22.83 cubic inches = Pi*r*r*height)
- SRT 6.4: PBL24651 - Bypass Valve at 8-16, Height 3.730", OD 3.770" (Canister volume of 41.64 cubic inches)
Doing at little math,
- SRT 41.64 cubic inches / 2500 6.4 22.83 cubic inches = 1.82 times the volume of the RAM 6.4 filter!
- Or flip it over and the 2500 6.4 filter has just at HALF (54%) the SRT filter volume.
- Again, assuming the same pleat count and filter material...
- Of course this is assuming Purolator didn't do anything tricky... And of course I didn't screw all this up.
Now does this actually matter? Hopefully not or shame on RAM.
I've been watching my oil pressure trying to will my way past the Hemi tick that the Dodge Magnum acquired at about 60K miles years ago. Regarding oil pressue, the lowest I've seen here in the hellscape of Arizona is 29PSI (85F "cold" startup), with warm idle at 32PSI and normal operation at 52-54 PSI. So in all cases I'm well above the Bypass Valve pressures.
So in summary I'm ordering a 3 pack of Purolator Boss PBL24651 SRT filters and 18 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40. I'll post here my oil pressures once I do the SRT filter oil change to see if it does in fact flow better than the RAM 6.4 peewee filter.
Any thoughts, concerns, recommendations, or outright bullsh!p detected in the above????
