New to Diesel Guy concerned about DEF usage in a new 2022 2500 RAM

Maybe I am too relaxed. New at using DEF. I bought some at Costco and used it immediately. My mileage on a 2022 diesel went from 20.4 to 18.8 and it may be still dropping.
Does DEF expire sitting around in a warehouse. No date on the box, just a batch number.
It sure does. Anywhere from 6mo to 2 years shelf life. That being said it won’t affect fuel mileage one bit. If your truck is doing a active regen you can see a drastic mileage drop in a short period of time.

Don't buy DEF at Costco is probably the lesson learned. There in no date of manufacture on the box.

I just bought a New 2500 ,crew cab, 4x4 Cummins,, it had 7 miles on it when I drove to Florida, stayed one month,, tons of stoplights and slow traffic in Ft. Myers,, total round trip was 3120 miles, not pulling any trailers,, Def tank was full when I started my trip,, I did Not add any Def on the round trip of 3120 miles,,but had one gallon in the tank when back home

Hi Guys, just got my first diesel 3 weeks ago. And I think my truck is using alot of DEF

I've done ~1400 km (~870 miles) so far in my new truck
So far ive used about 6.5 - 7 litres of DEF (1.7 to 1.8 Gallons)

for fuel economy / consumption - Im averaging about 13 Litres per 100km (21-22 MPG)

No towing, mostly highway driving

is this considered normal DEF usage or excessive DEF usage ?

do I need to visit the dealer ?

I have read that it should be 2-3% of fuel used. I believe I'm in excess of that (I'm closer to 3.6% of fuel used , if my math is correct)
I have also read that it should be about 2 Gal /800 miles (which seems more than 2 or 3%), Im at 2 Gal / 836 miles
Hey Straycat,

If you find yourself working with your dealership for this, please reach out to us. We're available via direct messaging and would be happy to get you some additional assistance.

Yeah, they don't use much when not towing.

Mine is using similar to what Straycat found. I just clicked 3000 miles today and I have used a little over 5 gallons of DEF. Based on what some others had said the usage slows after you hit the 5000 mile mark, but it is concerning that RAMCARES thinks Straycat should be working with his dealer to figure out why it is using so much.

Thanks for the reply Callie. Is it your view that this usage is Normal or Abnormal ?

You’ll find that Ram Cares pipes up with comments like that often, but doesn’t have any actual advice or insight into anything. The people manning the Ram Cares keyboard aren’t mechanics or engineers, they are social media reps. Just go look at the post about the three horn beep that they created, and now ignore.

Even if they know the answer to something it’s doubtful they are even authorized to post data on it.

Unfortunate. Seem like a good way for the brand to be in touch with the clientele.

I haven’t really been tracking mine. But I’m sure I’ve put in at least 4 boxes of DEF in mine and the dealer topped off once. Lays at least 15 gal if you include it being full at delivery, right? I’m under 9000 miles now.

Last DEF fillup was at 7,890 miles. I’ve put 15.59 gallons in. Currently at a 1/2 tank of DEF and 9K miles. Seems normal.

They might surprise you once in a while. They posted notice of a "service action" that was to be released long before the NHTSA got involved and forced Stallantis' hand on the HPFP recall.

(I found out later that Cummins bought a CP3 kit from S&S and basically copied it. S&S said they wouldn't have been able to meet demand for the adapter ring even a little so he wasn't too concerned with it. )

They have also helped members navigate dealer issues from time to time.

DEF consumtption is very consitent across these trucks. My lifetime DEF is 557 MPG and 2.2% Def to Fuel. Towing DEF MFG is around 320 MPG and 2.7% DEF to fuel.

I just read that,, Blue Def Platinum,,, runs much cleaner than regular Def, less injector problems,,I gotta get some.
You quoted me here, but I made no claims about the platinum DEF being superior. AAMOF, I've seen nothing definitive to suggest any name brand DEF is better than another.
