New recall 11/10/2022 for the 68RFE ** UPDATED INFO IN 1ST POST **

Damn, just bought my 22 2500 BH CTD in Sept and it has less than 2k miles on it. Mine is on the recall list. Called the local dealer I purchased it from and was told the fix or parts won't come until sometime in Q1 2023. I did place my name on a waitlist to be first in line for that part. There's likely going to be a long list of trucks that need it serviced so I would advise calling your local dealer and being placed on a waitlist for the part.

Picked up a couple of these Element fire extinguishers today. Keep one permanently in the truck now and another to move around to RV, car, and Jeep.

I’m not part of the recall but usually have at least one extinguisher in all my vehicles. Good to have. In the 3500 I have one mounted under the drivers seat using a Desert Does It Mount. Expensive but works well (you do have to trim some plastic though).

What are the conditions that caused the 68RFE to puke the fluid up the dipstick? Just saying hot/high pressure doesn't explain how it got to high temp/pressure.

Below I linked the fix for the last recall like this (W03). I wonder if the fix will be something similar for the newer trucks.

If you click the link it will download the dealer instructions.

Wow! My truck has the recall and I am not sure that our local dealer has a tech qualified to do that.

My 2020 2500 had the W03 completed over a year ago and I received the notice for the ZA3 last week, so I'm guessing not another throttle body plate replacement. I read somewhere it might involve moving the dipstick to the driver side, away from the Turbo and exhaust manifold. Guess it might still overflow but not where it might catch fire...

That would take a new trans case…. Im sure they will just change the vent as that is most likely the issue

I’m a volunteer FF and was working with some buddies at our training center today. We were testing out various fire extinguishers on our vehicle burn prop to see how they would perform. I’ll say I do carry a couple 10lb fire extinguishers in my truck but after todays exercise I have a better grasp of their limits.

There are lots of things under the hood that are very difficult to put out without a lot of water and / or foam. If you can catch things quickly you may have a chance, which is why it is wise to have something with you. But don’t risk your life, get severe burns or inhale toxic smoke on something that is very engaged (assuming you can get the hood up).

I’m regards to these Element sticks. We had one to test with an I have to say it was the worst performing of the bunch. Personally I wouldn’t bother with them.

A friend was shooting video of it and when it’s posted I can link to it. I will say it was a loaded test Fire that was difficult to put out but you could clearly see the performance differences between a chemical dump from an extinguisher and one of those Elements. Plus it seemed like you really had to get it in there and would risk severe burns trying to use it effectively.

The recall shows in My Mopar and says parts are available. It does not say whet the fix is.

They never will tell you on the sheet, its a new vent and locking dipstick but keep your old dipstick say it was lost. as the new one is not able to check the fluid level

So it’s just a sealing/locking dipstick tube? Doesn’t seem like much of a fix to the root of the problem which sounds like a lack of transmission cooling

The issue is the venting which is the change of vent so thats the fix and the dipstick is the just in case fix if the vent happens to get blocked

a dipstick with no marks on it is worthless for the purpose of being a dipstick. Why would they do such a thing?

What a joke on not being able to check fluid level. I still need to schedule with my dealer, but now I'll be sure to tell them to hold onto my stock dipstick for me. I've also got all the PPE goodies waiting to go on after I get this one completed to actually keep temps down.

I know these newer RFE's are supposed to be a little beefed up, but I'll still follow the playbook I know helps keep them alive down here in the Texas heat. Keeping it cool with a TBV delete, regular service (30k Drain/Fill and 60K Filters), and running a deep pan.

You haven’t tried to service many newer vehicles. Many manufacturers are going dipstick-less. They give to a check plug instead and you need a scanner to read AT fluid temp - it’s gotta be at the correct temp for the level to be read correctly.

It’s actually much more accurate than a dipstick but 10X more frustrating and time consuming

They wont keep it for you they have orders to destroy them so remove it before dropping it off just cover the dipstick tube to keep dust out

Yep very frustrating but when setup its so much better but not for the consumer who does check their fluids, also the dealers have orders to keep one dipstick for doing services

On a side note when a technician says it’s a “sealed” transmission it just means they’re too lazy to check the fluid condition/level the correct way…

I've had quite a few ZF 8 speeds in my time, love that transmission. You really don't have to service it unless you've run it hard and even then I've seen plenty that finally get serviced at 100k that look completely fine. But a fix that removes the ability to check tranny levels on the RFE is a big problem for me considering that's how the RFE was designed to be checked.

Chrysler did that for years on a lot of their transmissions. Has a dipstick tube and a plug but no stick. You have to buy a special dipstick tool to check the level but the stick had IIRC 10 levels that corresponded to different transmission fluid temps.
