I see benefits in both. Defining vehicles by generation or chassis codes is helpful in conversation to easily describe the vehicle; while model year is more helpful when describing the specifics of a vehicle. The model year can be messy too though, even for Ram when they had the 1500 and 1500 Classic sold side-by-side for like 6 years; but for some vehicles too where there was a fairly significant change mid-year (eg: 1999 Audi B5 A4, which in the car community is defined as 1999.0 and 1999.5, or Facelift 1999)
