New to the site - came across it during my research about Ram HD's w/ HO CTD. Plan on ordering a 2022 this week, still debating on SRW or DRW 3500 though. Need to see what my payload options are on a SRW (would like 4500lbs or more). Glad I found this site, as it led me to the likes of Mark Dodge vs local/regional dealers who either don't have any in stock or are asking for "market adjustments" north of 5k and won't budge.

Welcome aboard. What will you be towing?

To get north of 4500 of payload you are looking at a stripped SRW Tradesman or a pretty well optioned DRW. My current 2018 Tradesman has a payload of 4100, that was before the 5th wheel hitch, steps and tonneau cover etc. I have a 2022 3500DRW CTD/HO/Aisin Big Horn on order, not delivered yet but built. Putting the VIN into Ram's tow capacity site it is coming with a 4847 payload. That may seem low but the truck is pretty well optioned, cover, steps, spray in bed liner, 5th wheel prep and the 30K 5th wheel hitch. Since that is all factory equipped the 4847 is a true payload rating. I'm towing a 17K (when fully loaded) 5th wheel with 3400lbs of pin weight so I'll be fine. It will also has the ability to tow a small house at over 33,000lbs! A lot to think about when ordering, 4500 on a SRW will be tough to achieve.

Rear axle rating at 6800 lbs with the rear axle dry weight @ 2700, its too close for 4500 lbs, get the DRW

Upgrading our TT to a 5er - most we're looking at are 15k +, so I figure with pin weight and the family (wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs plus any gear, we're pushing 900-1000lbs w/o pin weight). Unless my math is off on the pin weight, I imagine it's safe to assume 15k+ is 3500+?

Appreciate the feedback - figured I was in DRW territory and that's ok. Never driven one daily but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
