New Cummins Issue

Hey Folks, I just purchased a '21 2500 with a Cummins. With only 700 miles on the truck, I'm getting a grinding noise in the front of the engine.
It sounds like it might by the belt tensioner but is hard to determine. Of course, the dealer won't repair/replace until something breaks.
I will be towing my track car with this truck so a breakdown on the way to/from the track would be a significant problem. Anyone else
had a similar problem?

Cummins HO Squeaky Belt or Pulley

Does anyone else's HO Cummins squeak/Chirp at startup? This is only the first startup of the day after its sat all night. Didn't do it when it was brand new 3 months ago and started about a month ago.. I love spending 82k on something just to have it sound like i have a bird living in the...

Wow the dealer told you they wouldn’t fix anything until it breaks?

I took a Toyota in for a squeaky clutch pedal and got a whole new clutch pedal assembly, oil change, tire rotation, detail and full tank of gas
 
Brutal_HO - I did notice a squealing noise at 600 miles but it stopped before I could get it to a dealership. My assumption is that it was the belt.

As for my dealer, they're good folks but I'm guessing they can't fix something until breaks or throws a code - which bearings will not do. Thus, the
reason for reaching out to ya'll on this forum.
 
I would take it back to the dealer and tell him to fix it , if it is grinding the tech will know it . Sitting beside the road over tensioner that may have been going south is unsatisfactory . Stupidest thing i've heard in a while . Wait till it breaks ? Are you kidding me !!
 
Agree, make the dealer fix it. little problems need to be fixed before they turn into big problems like a roadside breakdown.

Customer complaints/concerns need to be addresses as much as a set code. There are even TSB that are to be performed based solely on a customer complaint. Case in point is the HVAC TSB for pre 8/20 built 19-20 trucks. FCA knows it's an issue and there's a fix. Doesn't need to be any set codes, dealer doesn't need to diagnose, etc. if the customer "complains of ..." it gets fixed.

FYI, it has been reported, including in the thread I linked, that some are finding success with the "chirping" by cleaning all paint off the pulleys/idlers and installing a premium belt.

Yours could be another issue if it's "grinding" like dry bearings.

If you have any issues getting a resolution with a dealer for a fix, tag or PM RamCares here on the forum and they can help escalate a case.
 
I had a ticking/squealing problem with my 2019 Cummins like that and they replaced the belt and tensioner. Tech said the factory belts are junk and they installed a Gates belt. All under warranty!
As far as a “grinding noise” I have been having that for several months now. Cant tell if it’s from the motor or tranny but I only notice it when keeping steady at 30mph or less in town....those sneaky speed traps you know. I have kinda noticed that if I use the gear selector and go down to 4th gear at that speed it doesn’t make the noise.
It’s going in pretty soon for the cab mounts, new tires cause the stock Firestone’s are junk at 20k miles already and this grinding issue! Hope there is a fix for this 70k rattle box that I have been more than patient with since it was delivered on Nov.2019.

I would take it back to the dealer if it is making any noise at all. Back in '94 I bought a new F250 and with a few thousand miles on it I started hearing a noise similar to what you describe. The dealer told me something similar. Not long after, the idler pulley bearing locked up and threw the belt. The belt took out the lower radiator hose. I spent several hours sitting on the side of a freeway waiting for a tow.

I think from the sounds of it he is just assuming the dealer wont doing anything until it breaks

Update - I took the truck to the dealership and they replaced the idler pulley first which didn't fix it. They then replaced the
belt tensioner and the problem is resolved. Will be towing my car to the track in a 24ft enclosed trailer this weekend. I'll
update if the issue returns. Thanks for the feedback.
