Neither is throwing a transmission at a transfer case issue. The transfer case doesn't care what gear the transmission is in for a 2WD-4HI shift, only a 4HI-4LO.
I suspect the issue won't be fixed with a new transmission, but time will tell.

I agree it sounds like a transfer case issue. We never did get the exact symptom though - I am assuming from the OP's description the truck was acting like it was in neutral with no forward or reverse gears?
