How many of y’all pay the extra cost every year to register your truck and the NC DMV charges you more because of what you Might tow ? And the local DMV tells you that you have no choice. Not because of what you’re truck weighs but because of the commercial towing weight that you’re truck could tow. Well I have just found out that this is false information. When I challenged the North Carolina DMV in Raleigh I received my regular tags without the extra charge for a weighted tag. I was unable to do this through my local DMV AND HAD to reregister through Raleigh. Just saying.

I did a ton of research on this when I was registered in NC. Your tag needs to cover the actual combined weight of your truck and trailer, not the theoretical max. If you get pulled over and they weigh you you’ll get hit with a fine if you’re over your reg. RV travel trailers are exempt, but everything else counts.
