NC Non-CDL Class A - License for RV trailer over 10k - anyone obtained one since 2020?

Pretty sure as long as there’s no air brakes you don’t need a cdl
Air brakes have no bearing of required license. License are required based on GVWR or GVWR. Many vehicles have air brakes that do not require anything more than a regular license. I can speak for Ga, no additional license is required for RVs as stated above.

This has been an interesting read, I've never heard of non commercial class A licenses...

I've had my class A since 2004 as that is how I make my living, wish I had something useful to add about the non commercial licenses but I got nothing.

I obtained a NC class A non-commercial drivers license two years ago. My truck and toy hauler combined is over 26k with a trailer over 10k. By law you are required to have a class A regular license in such a case. It is not a cdl. I know folks say you don’t need one and I know plenty of guys that have a class C and have heavier setups than mine, but the weights and requirements for each class are printed plainly on the back of the NC drivers license, so I did what I deemed necessary to be compliant. I called the DMV a few times and finally found a knowledgeable person that explained it. I made an appointment at the local dmv office and took some figuring out but the local dmv person called and got instructions on what to to do. I took the same written test as a class A commercial folks. I probably even took parts of the test I didn’t need, like air brakes, but I read the whole drivers booklet so I didn’t sweat it. I then took a simple driving test with the camper. Did a small pre-trip inspection of lights and brakes and then drove the camper a few miles and that was it. Very simple other than the wait to get the appointment.

My bad. Actually, if the total weight of the tow vehicle and trailer (RV, cargo, flat bed) is over 26k, then a Class A non-CDL is required in NC.

If the trailer is 10,001 then a regular class A is required.
