MX4 Tonneau Cover Issue

Has anyone experienced issues in installing an MX4 cover on 5th gen 2500? My mod guy says there are different rails? We are prepping for the cover and this cam up. Best I could review on the web suggested it may be a 1500 only issue and/or only when the truck had installed the factory cover? Amy insight is very much appreciated. Thanks

I took the MX4 off my 2018 4g 2500 crew cab and fitted it straight on to my 2019 4.5g 3500 crew cab - same everything and it actually fits the new truck better. It looks to me as though the bed it exactly the same as the 4 g trucks. Today I fitted Deezee bed rails and there were no clearance issues, either.

Hey all, recently bought an MX4 for my 2019 Laramie 2500 without ram boxes. Having some difficulties and was hoping someone had a quick fix rather than waiting for BAK support. ...

Just installed model 448203 and am having issues - the rear latch closest to the tailgate will not latch. The latch housing as well as the inner rubber seal of the cover (that sits in the bed rail channel) will not fit the rear width. It looks like it's missing by about the width of the factory plastic bed rail covers. Looked around everywhere and could only find one other person commenting on similar issues here: https://www.ramforum.com/threads/bakflip-too-wide-to-latch.50069/

Hoping someone has some knowledge to pass to me on this one.

Do you mean it is too narrow or that the tonneau rests inside the rails and the tongue won't engage?

Either way, the first thing to do is ensure the assembly is aligned centrally in the gap between the rails over the bed. If it is not straight/square (front to rear and side to side) you will have trouble fitting it and any initial misalignment will be exaggerated as you unfold it to the rear.

If the gap is too wide and the locking sears won't engage, you can put packing pieces between the bed side and the closure rail. In the box they supply various thickness of packing - sort of rubberised strips pf cloth - each about 5 in long. Any thin, waterproof, foam packing will do. Fit between the rail and the bed and tighten the clamps. Beat in mind the top doesn't slide on the side rails so it doesn't need to be straight.

If the bed is too narrow, the plastic cap could be cut to give about 1/16 - 1/8 may be a little more, but you will probably find you'd need the packing between the metal bed side and the rail if you cut dow the plastic.

Thanks @DaveyB . The gap between the two cover rails is too narrow not allowing the rear of the cover to fully close - and the issue here is no the latch itself, it's the housing and bracket.

As far as alignment, the entire cover fits well until the last 6-8 inches. I know that there is a decent change in the width of the bed from the front to rear, and wonder if poor QA has anything to do with it.

On moding - Really did not want to start hacking at the plastic cap for a bed cover... if anything I might shave down a little from the latch housing and inner cover seat, but I really did not want to alter the cover either.

Question on shims - definitely see that there is angle on the bed rail. Every example I've seen online does not use the provided angle shims, do you/anyone have any thoughts there?

I cut the driver's side rail - it was a 1/8" or so too long.

I also had to cut some of the latching bracket off and narrow the latching system on the last panel. It was way too wide to latch at all. Again, it was about 1/8" of an inch.

@delmoniCO

Happy to hear I am not the only one having trouble.
Not happy to hear that I might have to mod my ~900$ cover because BAK's margins were trash.

Wonder what BAK support is going to say once they open up post holiday.

Was less work to get out the angle grinder than talk to customer service and deal with repackaging and mailing the whole cover back.

On the MX4 I have on my wife's '19 Rebel w/ Rambox the driver's side rail was way too tight to slide into the factory rail. Plenty of people on the forums exchanged it for a new one or whatever. A bit of grease and a deadblow hammer took all of 5 minutes to solve the problem.

Though Bak Industries are certainly not the greatest at quality control (my holding open struts were rattling loose so I drilled out their riveting attempt and replaced it with mine - simply clamping it in place made all the difference) the tonneau now on my 3500 was on my 2500 for 2 years before that. It fits the 3500 much more snuggly that it ever did on the 2500 and the only difference I can see is the new model plastic caps are a different design. It's as likely to be a QA problem in the Mexico Ram plant as it is Bak Industries!

Before you do any cutting of either, measure the consistency of the width along the tonneau panels and the space between the bed rails. You might be able to bend the bed side weld flange without too much issue, and the plastic cap will flex enough to follow when clamped by the tonneau rail clamps. Moving those clamps as far to the rear as possible (or where the pinch point occurs) may make a difference, too.
