Muffler exchange

I’m sure it sounds awful, have you heard a 4 cyl with a magnaflow before?
Honestly the only difference in sound is you get a really deep drone if its anything like my 2011 1500 i would just hit the - on the shifter and it would disable the mds but in all honesty i had such a lead foot with it the mds never kicked in lol

Exactly. A bit deeper and a more pronounced stutter, but far from comparable to a true 4 cyl.

My 2016 with Mufflex/Magnaflow and no resonator sounded just about the same as my 2020 with MBRP and no resonator, especially when MDS does kick in.

My hemi was straight piped.... my buddy has a 2018 2500 with the 5.7 straight piped and it is pretty quiet i find

I keep going back and forth with swapping mufflers. Magnaflow 19493 is my main looker but still on the fence. Some say drone and some say no drone, some say it’s loud and other say it’s not. Although most say that get a MPH increase with the less restrictive muffler over the large factory can. If there an option out there that is less restrictive than factory to be able to benefit the performance but as quiet or only mildly louder than stock. I know this sounds silly but I can not make up my mind.
I'm really interested in your (performance/sound) result with the MagnaFlow on your Cummins if that's the way you decide to go. Do you have any intake modifications?
I put one (single 3" in and out) MagnaFlow on my 2005 Yukon Denali (6.0L) and the drone in the cabin was so pronounced I had to add a straight-through shorty muffler right behind it which totally cured the drone. Even though, the sound is really nice and the performance increase was noticeable (by butt dyno). Just replaced the Flowmaster (dual, 2.5" in-single 3" out) on my son's Jeep with a MagnaFlow (dual 2.5" in-dual 2.5" out). The performance difference was remarkable! And the sound was awesome. The engine (LT4; super-charged 6.2L@685HP) was totally restricted with the Flowmaster. When you compart the construct of the mufflers, Flowmaster had 4 walls of angled baffles impeding flow, the MagnaFlow had a crossover that you could see straight through the muffler. The Flowmaster is a 16ga aluminized 409s stainless but feels like a cast-iron can, and the MagnaFlow is 409 stainless which is at least half the weight (albeit 4" shorter can). If/when I make this mod I'll likely include the Banks power master ram intake manifold at the other end 1st then replace the exhaust to see which has the most performance impact.
Good luck with your choice.

Is that what you read? Really?

Wildwoods, Ill post if I decide to pull the trigger. I do want to mention I have the 6.4 and not the Cummins engine, so any feedback may not help you. I beat my head on this because I am like rockcrawlerdude and a old man at heart. I love the sound of a good engine/cam, exhaust combo that will make your head turn. I have had the 350, straight piped trucks in the 90s and love it then. That's when I could care less if it droned or even knew what drone was. Cool was loud and loud was cool. I do not want that loud now, as I stated before the performance or MPG increase of any kind would be a plus but he main reason is Iwant is just a little mellow, tone to sound good. My neighbor has a new 1500 and just put a Borla Dual kit on it. Its too loud for my liking and it was a full cat back kit. It sounds good just to much for me at 38 and 70 year old heart. I wish someone would dyno these besides the company or someone trying to make money and report back. I feel like to say a better flowing muffler will not do anything and it is only in the butt dyno isn't 100 percent true. Yes it may not give anyone massive amounts of HP increase or turn you stock engine into a custom engine but I think it would help provide something in tune of engine production number. So on a diesel its known to lower egt(s) which can be easily read on a gauge. That is something, so to say its all in your head or others wise cant be 100 percent. The two mods in my head that could cost about the same depending on how its done is the 8.4 upgrade and exhaust. Of those two the 8.4 will get done first.

Check out posts 132 and 142 on the below string. I installed the Magnaflow direct fit a few months back and am very happy. I see a lot of discussion on the internet about drone but I don’t notice it. I have accepted the truck does it so I turn up the XM radio and enjoy the ride. It isn’t too loud... it is louder... but in a better quality tone. I recently got rid of the stock muffler I like the Magnaflow that much.

Make the swap, keep your OEM muffler and switch back if you don‘t like it. I found the best price on eBay. Good luck

I agree with all of this. And even with the radio on a volume level of 8, it's more than enough to drown it out and still have normal conversation.

Any performance gains are negligible if any. I would assume that a catalytic converter would be more restrictive than the muffler, although I’ve never actually looked into it.

Kimo7, Thank you for your reply. The performance enhancement I was referring to in my earlier thread was swapping out a restrictive Flowmaster for a MagnaFlow on a Jeep Crawler with a supercharged 6.2 liter engine. I'm guessing it will require a number of modifications (intake, exhaust and tune engine and transmission) to the 2021 Cummins HO to see (or feel) an appreciable performance gain. I do appreciate your experience/feedback with just the muffler change.

I should have quoted the OP (Woody284) in my reply which is several months old, I’m a little late to the conversation. I was replying to his asking about experience with a muffler swap.

In your situation, I agree with you from everything I’ve found out, it will take a significant systems change from air intake to complete cat back exhaust to get big HP gains. Good luck with your search

I'm between the direct fit magnaflow and the solo performance MR400.

There’s a video of a red Power Wagon on YouTube with a nice sound. It has a Black Widow Venow 250 dual 3” in dual 3” out, over the axle and out the corners with 4” tips. Has anyone done a true dual setup with 2 mufflers? I had that on my 04 Sierra and it sounded great with Flowmaster 40s. It was great when I was 22, but I like the sales pitch of ‘all tone, no drone’ now haha

Why are we talking about performance gains from a muffler swap on an 8,000 lb truck? Let's be generous and say the muffler gives 10hp. Do you really think you're going to feel that difference in the truck? Think power/weight ratio. If you think you feel a difference in performance from a muffler swap; it's in your head. This is not a 2500lb Miata with 170hp where 10hp is a big % jump.

I have the magnaflow direct fit muffler. It's not that much of a difference in the cabin with all the NVH items these trucks have. The difference is heard outside the truck.

Does the Magnaflow have a deep sound?

Yes, it’s throaty. I love it. I posted a link below to a different thread that has a video that demonstrates the difference in sound between the stock muffler compared to the Magnaflow.
