Well friends, after a long and in-depth decision making process, I’ve decided it’s time to take a temporary hiatus from the Ram HD truck ownership circle. I made the decision to offload my 2022 and step down to a 1500 for a few years. I’m nearing 60k miles in 3 years on my current 2022 3500 DRW HO. Although the truck has been performing pretty well overall, I’m ready to move on to something else for a while. I’d like to say these past three years and 60k miles have been completely uneventful, however that simply isn’t the case. The truck did experience its share of headaches. Mostly related to build quality issue. While those issues were all ultimately handled under warranty, each one (and there were many) required multiple trips to the dealer, and in some cases, several days out of service. Ultimately the total downtime was, in my opinion, excessive compared to my previous Ram ownership experiences. That being said, I did truly enjoy the truck in many ways too. I’ll be sad to see it go, but also somewhat relieved to be moving on. I would like to buy another new Ram diesel, but I’m not sure I’m ready for the new 2025’s yet. I’d like to have them on the road for a few years to get them fine tuned. I’ve decided to jump down to a 1500 this time. Going with a brand new 2025 Big Horn lvl 2 Night Edition with the 3.0 SO hurricane and 3.92 axle ratio. My wife has had three Ram 1500’s in the past ten years. All of her trucks have been steadfast reliable and performed flawlessly from purchase to trade in time. She commutes over an hour to work so she racks up mileage fast. I’ve been impressed with the ones we’ve owned and would like to try owning one as well.

So why make the step down? It’s simple really. Comes down to two goals: Save money, and gain more cabin space for family related daily activities. Now that we added a second child to the family, our truck cab space is becoming more and more a necessity. Simply put, my dually cab was ridiculously small compared to the current generation half ton Rams, and that cab space is needed. The save money part is also a serious consideration. My wife and I want to focus on getting some of these property development projects completed in the next two years. We just built a new horse barn and want to fence off the pastures and build a riding arena. I figured the extra money I’m spending on the diesel between operating, maintenance, and monthly payment would be better invested in our homestead for now. I can sit back for a few years, drive something less complex and less expensive to operate while they get the new ones dialed in. As for towing, I won’t be needing the dually now that the farm where I’ve worked the past 27 years has been officially sold. The only towing I need to do now is bumper pull two-horse trailers and the occasional smaller material moves (most of which can be handled by an aluminum light equipment trailer). Im sure in the next 3 years or so, I’ll probably be ready to buy another dually. Once we get these property development projects completed, I’ll be on the hunt for a gooseneck horse trailer with living quarters. Maybe by then the new HD ram will have a new cab structure. After owning two of these DT 1500’s and my current dually, the bigger cab on the half tons is superior for family oriented trips and daily chores. I’ll miss the diesel for the next few years, but I’ll enjoy the savings, the larger roomier cab, and the reduced headaches related to emissions systems. My local dealership treated me really well. Going to be driving off the lot in a brand new one tomorrow evening for a whopping $300 a month lol. That’s pretty hard to beat. IMG_0849.jpegIMG_0910.jpeg

What did you tow with the Dually? I must say both trucks look great.

Mostly farm related work.
It was a joy to tow with and I’ll miss having the capacity and capability to tow anything I want. But for now, this half ton is the more logical move. I’ll be curious to see how it handles the smaller trailers compared to my wife’s 1500 with the 5.7 hemi

Not as hard as you’d think. I’ve enjoyed it for the last three years, but it’s also been an off and on headache. Nicest truck I’ve ever owned but also the worst one in terms of build quality and initial experience. Spent too much time at the dealership getting stupid stuff fixed under warranty. I’ll be ordering another new diesel in 3 years or so, I hope the next one is a better representation of the quality and reliability I’ve come to expect. Same goes for this new half ton!

Totally understand brother. You’ve helped me out a ton over the past couple years. Hopefully you stick around to give us your wisdom every now and then. We’ll be looking forward to hearing about your new ride in the few years. I too couldn’t jump on the 2025 bandwagon after losing my 2022, I’m hoping my 2024 HO is everything my 2022 wasn’t.
Good luck with the 1500! Those are sweet trucks!

Thanks man, that means a lot.
I have every intention of sticking around, being useful, and continuing to share my knowledge as well as improve my own. It’ll be interesting to sit on the other side of the fence for a few years and gain an outsider perspective. This is the first non-HD, non-diesel truck I’ve owned since my teenage days. I’m excited on one hand, sad on the other. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m remaining hopeful and optimistic.

I'll be really interested to hear what you think of the engine, that's a pretty huge change in terms of the way power is made from your Cummins to the Hurricane. That little gas engine not only makes more power and torque than a 5.7 hemi, it has more than the 6.4 hemi as well.

I totally get that decision. As I was having some issues over the past 5 months with my 6.4 I looked a bit at both GM 2500 Duramax's and also have some interest in the 1500 smaller Duramax. I really like my Ram but am not a brand specific buyer, can buy anything if it strikes my fancy.

Good luck and appreciate all the info you share here!

Party On. Hopefully the Hurry-cane is reliable for you. Ya any insight you can share on the towing differences would interesting. Obviously apeles and ernges, different trailers and what not but many others takes on towing are focused on comparing to the Hemi or other gassers. Thx and Gods speed.:p

I totally get you on the cab size point. Ford and GM have essentially used the same cab for their light duty vs heavy duty trucks for years. Only Ram held onto the smaller cab, for reasons I don't quite understand. The build quality issue is so spot on. I've walked away from vehicles because you get the feeling the folks assembling it either cared, or didn't that day. We bought a JL wrangler when they first came out in 2018, and honestly after three years my wife and I did the math and realized it spent almost six consecutive months at the dealer, or waiting to go to the dealer, all for stupid build quality stuff (leaky tops, jerky transmission, sun visor plastic splitting over and over, etc...)

Looking forward to hearing about your towing experience with the new 3.0! I've had my eye on one, if we end up getting rid of the big travel trailer :)

I hear you on the cab size thing too for a growing family. It was one of the driving factors for me moving to Ford from Ram. That and a lot of the build quality reliability issues you called out that seem to plague the '22s.

All our kids are grown now so the cab space isnt a huge deal.

We tried Chevy DRW on for size last year. I had all kinds of issues, mechanical and interior rattles. All 3 trucks had to have the steering intermediate shafts, and front hub extensions replaced. The second truck had a front drive shaft that would clunk like i was unbalanced when letting off the fuel. They tried 3 drive shafts but all did it so they shimed the transfer case on the 3rd one to fix it. All had some degree of door rattles when going over bumps. It also sounded liek a tin can in the cab...seemed like you heard every bit of road noise. I did like the trans and new L5P for 2024. I just could not get pas the interior issues.

The only positive comment for the Chevy after trading it was from my wife. She liked that the Chevy seat would go back further - which she is only 5'3" tall so she really noticed that LOL.

In 2022 we bought a F350 DRW, much like the Chevy it had a lot of rattles and Cab noise. The front doors would rattle and flex badly hooked up to the 5th wheel when hitting rough patches at freeway speeds.

I will stick with Ram. I will say on the 2024 Ram I had to through and tighten all the bolts on the doors panels and the bolts that hold UC5 to the bezel to eliminate some rattles. There is still a slight rattle form the center console on certain conditions, so today I also went and tightened the 4 front mounting bolts for the center console. All were not even hand tight. Hopefully that wraps up all the little rattles

Good luck keep up on your oil changes. Anything with a turbo that’s not a diesel requires frequent oil changes In my opinion. The candle that burns brighter doesn’t burn as long like the old saying goes.

The rolling hills of PA.
Got it home today and immediately crawled under and started to install the running boards. I like the engine oil filter placement and the oil pan drain plug placement is good too. Finished the night off by installing the bed cover. I put 60 miles on it today. Very impressed.
Really sharp truck!!!

When you get the 4" lift and 37's on it you're gonna own the rolling hills of PA! :D

As I looked at some 1500's when I was in the market and before buying the Ram 2500, one thing I decided was the shorter short beds wouldn't work for me. The 6'4" on my 2500 is about as short as I'd want to go, I have paddle boards and kayaks in the back in warmer weather, just generally want the extra length without going to an 8' bed. I found that narrowed the choices quite a bit.
