Mileage before first oil change

Ok, as an engineer do you think there's anything to the idea of the micro metallic pieces helping to break in your new diesel engine? And if you interrupt the process, break in may take longer? I'm not sold either way, just curious as to people's thoughts on this.

I thought we were talking about gas trucks.

Interesting...i never go over 5k for regular changes but always changed oil the first time very early, as in 1500 or so. Granted, this is only my third new vehicle and i’m 55! Maybe just paranoia.
55 is a good number.........for this year!

What I mean when I say "I'm an engineer" is I'm talking about a way of thinking like an engineer (we call it critical thinking although we can be as dumb as the next guy). Your question on micro metallic stuff is really interesting and I'm gonna google it.

I've never heard of this, and I have to say I completely disagree with the idea. If it were a good thing machinery manufacturers would put micro metal filings in every piece of machinery to help with break in. Oil would include micro metal filings in it. Break-in oils are formulated to *prevent* scuffing and wear. https://www.amsoil.com/p/break-in-oil-sae-30--brk/

Pieces of metal no matter what size are never a good thing in a bearing, a lifter, an oil pump, a cylinder wall or other manufactured part or system.

I mostly agree. Good points for sure. I guess I'm picturing the bearings doing their thing, with minor surface imperfections being smoothed down on a very small scale, also the cross hatch honing sharp edges. No idea really just speculation

I changed min at 6200. Had 10% left on monitor. Close enough for me. Severe service is 5k, regular service is not longer than 8500. Anywhere 5-7500 miles seems reasonable enough for me.

On a side note. These filters are tiny.

They use the same filter as my Dodge Dart 2.4L

Did my first oil and filter change at 500 miles on my 6.4L hemi.

I've always done that on all my motors, even the ones I've built. Cheap cost for peace of mind that all the break in stuff is out of the motor.

At 20% on oil life and before i tow rv from New York to florida in December for the winter and again before i tow it back in April. So far after 36k still full.

My new truck will get its first change at 500 miles. Prefer to get the breakin metals out early.

Changed over to Redline 0w40 at 800 miles. Using Mopar filter.

On my ‘21 3500 I did my first @ 500 miles. I was very happy that there’s a built-in “funnel” for the oil filter to drain cleanly.

My ‘17 1500 Hemi that I traded in would make such a mess when changing that filter it would drive me crazy.

Changed mine at 768 miles and 23 hours total. 4 idle and 19 run hours. Definitely some glitter of metal and different colors of small pieces of RTV and gasket material in the filter when I cut it open. May change it early again.

Good plan. I was 1111 on first and then went under 4000 on next and my last two have been right at 5000 and thats where i will stay from here on out and at 5000 around 40% left on oil change indicator So if i was on a long trip i would not feel bad about stretching it out a bit longer.

Changed my oil at 1800 after I drove it home from the midwest, I live on the west coast. Just had another oil change done at 5000 miles and will do so every 5000 from now. My manual just says there's an oil change warning that comes on the instrument cluster but does not list any thing in the manual other than not more then 8000 miles between changes. First vehicle I've ever had that didn't have an oil change schedule!
