Mega Cab Dually 5th Wheel Towing Recommendations

I've had both of those wheelbases and I haven't felt like the longer CC LB wheelbase is any more difficult to park or maneuver.
Ya im probably nit picking here. I used to drive a CCLB and it was fine daily. My driveway is already really tight with the CCSB so idk how doable it will be with a CC LB dually but the difference between that and a Mega Cab dually is probably minimal. I appreciate your feedback.

I look at it this way: Yeah, the mega has more back seat space, but you sit in the front. If you’re towing a 5th wheel a lot then it’s just going to be simpler to have a long bed, and any lost rear seat storage area can be made up for with a crossover box in the bed.

Logically I know you all are right on CC vs Mega. Part of me just wants the mega though lol. Logic will probably prevail and Ill order the LB in the next week or so.

I was in the same situation. I have to also enjoy what I'm driving and like the way to looks. The MC DRW is the best looking dually on the road IMHO. Thats what sold me and I can work around the short bed, and still love the looks of the truck I'm driving. I personally have a AUH setup that I took from my 2013 2500 CCSB, but my 5er is only 11k loaded so no where near close to the weight capacity. When we do eventually look at upgrading the RV I might look for new hitches as well. But 2 years in the AUH has been fine for what I have needed. Still can't turn 90* but have never been in a situation I've needed to, and just being aware of the cab/rv clearance when I have to make u-turns or tight turns.

Appreciate the feedback. I figured I would need to swap the plate for the B&W so thank you for confirming.

Im leaning towards gen y as that seems like the simplest solution.

Absolutely will not consider the AUH, based on your feedback and others, Ive written that off for my application.
I don't think goosebox is a "vs" on the GenY hitch... Look at this TFL video at about 3:18 into the video.
And that video is a short bed Crew... I was looking hard at a megacab with similar questions. I finally just said no to the Megacab when I had to park my crew cab at Costco and was sticking out into the drive... That's too much length for me... Maybe not you... AND,, I'm a weekender, not a full timer...

Ya I agree that the look of the Mega Cab dually is hard to beat. Good to know youve had a good experience towing your 5ver with the Mega. If for some reason we decide we really want the mega ill just get a slider and deal with not having as much usable bed space.

The coupler they are using here isn't what Im referring to. Gen Y also make a king ping box that connects via gooseneck similar to the reese goose box. The Mega Cab dually would be the shorter of the 2 options I am looking at, we will either get the Mega Cab Dually or CC long bed dually. Crew cab short bed isnt an option, need DRW.

The GenY is quite nice and since Reese doesn’t make one for the Turning Point, it’s the only option available for my setup. It isn’t Lippert approved………

Nice setup! Thanks for sharing. You are running that on a standard goose ball correct? No offset? How tight are you able to corner? Have you ever run into issues where you couldn't make a maneuver you were trying to make?

I am running in the “standard” position right over the axle, though it is a Weighsafe goose so it sits up about 3” higher than the standard drop in (don’t need the extra height, just wanted the scale cuz I’m a geek like that). I haven’t had any clearance isses while towing or backing. Pulling forward the cap will not hit the cab, I’ve gone into multiple parking lots doing full lock “donuts”, not to mention having to turn around in my cul-da-sac every time we come home, that pic above shows the closest it gets. Backing up is a different story which is the case for most, I will hit if you go too far but I’ve backed into some really tight spots and have not had any issues. Always watching out but I’ve been able to pull any maneuvers needed to date.

It is important to note, I have a 150 Series 5ver. The caps are designed for max clearance in short bed trucks, not sure if it’s got significantly more clearance than a “standard” 5ver, most manufacturers these days seem to be designing the front caps a bit tighter with all the crewcab short beds on the roads these days.

Really appreciate all of the input and effort grabbing all of those photos. Would love to make a setup like that work for us, I would be able to get the best of both worlds that way.

I run the AUH with my Mega dually -- 5'er is 14k loaded down so probably "mid" size in grand scheme of things? Defiantly not one of the larger units. Trailer is 35' nose to tail.

Ive never worried about hitting the cab and can swing the trailer somewhere around 75*. It turns very tight. Some of this ability is due to the nose cap design of the trailer though.

I have the aluminum hitch in my Mega and I also run a steel Anderson that drops into the 5th wheel rails in the bed of my 99 ram.

I don't get the hate for this hitch.. I've had it for about 4 years in a few different rucks and never had an issue.

I suppose if I was full timing I'd have something more permanent or heavy duty in there, but then you'd lose some of the smoothness that the AUH offers. It's a great towing experience.

Was hoping you would chime in with your experience having a mega dually. Much appreciated. I guess I just worry about the long term strength/durability if we are moving close to 20k pounds consistently, too many weird stories with the AUH. Those that have it seem to absolutely love it for the most part.

Yeah, id agree with that. For a trailer that large, peace of mind would go to a proven steel hitch in the bed.

Next time im hooked to mine, I'll get a pic of the turn angle.

FWIW, I started with the AUH. I had no clearance issues and I ran mine in the “forward” position. With my light 5ver I was at less than 1/2 the max weight rating so I wasn’t worried with the aluminum hitch however, since the Turning Point pin box had no cushioning and neither did the AUH I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the completely rigid connection. The setup worked well and I have no real complaints other than wanting something to cushion the connection and absorb some of the harshness between the road, truck, and trailer.

This pic was taken day of delivery and the AUH was setup for max clearance with the mount spun to what I call the “rear” position and puts the weight just aft of the rear axle. I had so much clearance I spun it around when I got home and put the weight directly over the axle.

I know a lot of people have answered but figured I'd add in my experience. I've got the MC SWR with the goose box and BnW ball. I tow a large 5v'er and have had this setup for thousands of miles. I've never gotten to the point of "I wish I had x, y or z" because of clearance issues turning ect. We've been in some really tight spaces and never worried about making contact with anything. Very happy with the tow setup. It's really personal preference, as I could agree with what most have said about different setups as I've had many of them. We are in a similar situation where we really like the look and added room in the backseat for the dog and kid and can deal with the shorter bed because of the MC. The only perfect setup is the one that works for you, good luck with this, some good info on this forum.

Thanks did the feedback. sounds like you’re running a standard gooseball correct? Not the offset b & w?
