when I start the truck in cold and it kicks into high idle, for a while it has a real low bass-y rumble to it. shakes the house. After a while something changes and it goes to a normal sounding high idle and the house stops shaking. Is the difference the baffles/shutters being open or closed?

Its the exhaust brake turning on to cause load on the engine so it heats up faster

Yep, it’s normal. I like it, kinda wish it did it all the time ;)

Some days i start the 01 bright and early just so i can hear it run on 3cyl in high idle with the straight pipe instead of taking the 19 daily driver to work lol i like the loud morning starts that the EB rumble just cant fufill

3cyl high idle is a beautiful orchestra of the 5.9 converting diesel fuel to pure noise. I need another 2nd gen. I never owned a 2nd gen 24v, only several 12 valves. I did have a 01.5 that started off as a 24v but I reassigned it’s gender to be a 12 valve. Long story short a guy had it out in PA it was a 1/4 mile and dyno queen. After junking the motor for the umpteenth time he sold it blown motor and I scooped it up for a deal. Put lots of fuel and air to it. I had it for a few years then moved on. It was fun while it lasted!

haha, alright, I wasn't worried about it, just curious what the difference was.

Thanks!
