Lifter Failure? Report it here!

Lifter failure finally got my 2022 3500 SO with 60k and I have only towed once with it since new, I have been noticing a very loud weird rattle and decided to take it in to my local dealer to have them look at it. They decided it was a problem after disconnecting the torque convertor and auxiliary drive belt so all the noise was just the Cummins engine running and then they started to order parts, then Star stepped in and had them do a bunch of Peco sound checks to document all the noises. They told me my noise is the loudest down on the oil pan area which is interesting, and I can hear this rattle/typewriter noise that is rpm dependent on the passenger side up top just below the valvetrain cylinder 1-2 as the worse area to me almost like a wrist pin or something idk but I did not climb under my truck while it was running. Whatever the noise is it does not sound good IMO.

I was given a case # for a future repair as they don't have a fix at this moment for my truck per bulletin S2509000005 for camshaft/lifter repairs anymore.

I filled out the database for my camshaft/lifter failure

Star wants a second round of peco sound recordings of my engine, not sure what this means for my truck or they did not get a good picture of what's going on with the first batch idk. Anyway I drop it off today so they can look at it tomorrow all day. All I know is my engine has a horrible rattle as soon as it comes off idle and it's not the drive accessory stuff nor torque converter as they disconnected that for the first round of testing.

That sounds like it’s in the area of the oil filter adapter/oil cooler.

Does anyone know if the 25’ model engine incorporates an anti drain back device in the oil filter housing ? I know they went to a cartridge type filter and got away from the spin on. I’m curious to know if a filter with an ADBV might help with the cam/lifter issue by keeping the hydraulic lifters primed and not draining down every time the engine is cut off. There are filters for 6B Cummins engines that contain ADBV’s. Just thinking out loud.

Do not think the 2025 has an ADBV , it is a cartridge and you can see thru the holes in both ends.
The filter does comes with Fleetgaurd instructions. ( important parts below)

#1 With the Engine off, drain the liquid from lube oil housing.
c. Remove oil filter cartridge from the housing
e. After filter is removed from housing. wait 90 seconds for oil remaining in filter housing to drain back to the block.

Those instructions tell me that it does have something to keep the housing from being empty every time it is started like the 2024 model engines and all previous years.

No bueno. Keep us updated!
Got my truck back Friday 9-19-2025, they got all the peco sound recordings sent off to Star but still haven't gotten an answer back on what is their plan yet for a fix. New camshaft/lifter, new crate engine, pound sand, entended warranty, or snake oil additive. The dealer left the work order open till we hear back from Star, before these noises started happening I started looking at 2026 Megacabs in Ceramic Grey as MY2025 was a bust for that color. I found a nice 2026 that has everything but Tow Technology Group but I'm stuck in limbo over this issue. I don't know why all SRW Megacabs are missing Tow Technology Group.

I'm wondering for the reason they wanted a second round of peco sound recording is they installed their snake oil additive from that TSB during first sound readings without telling me and wanted to take sound readings a second time to see if this made any changes to my truck for other cases idk. If they did put it in I can tell you it didn't help the situation out as the noise is still present.

Hang in there. This sucks for sure. Hopefully they do you right.

It's been a week since the second round of peco sound testing from Ram/Star and a month since the first peco testing and told about a future repair, I stopped by the local dealer and ask them if there is any progress on what is their fix for my truck or not.

All I get is Star has not reached out back to them and the work order is still open leaving me hanging in limbo for a month. I'm debating myself if I want to trade this in on another Ram and give them more of my hard earned money or not or going to a Ford, Chevy/GM is completely out of the question for how I was treated with my 2025 Z06 I no longer own and all the damage they did in one service visit to fix the AC radiator and then tried to hide it. I have thought about just doing the flat tappet conversion and be done with this but I should not have to since I have 40k of warranty still remaining.

I would at least wait till you get some kind of resolution from the dealership before you abandon ship or throw money at your truck and void the powertrain warranty, you still have quite a bit of it left. Hopefully your truck doesn’t leave you stranded in the meantime. I would definitely keep pestering the crap out of them though.

Yah, tried that approach yesterday of stopping by and asking for any update since it's been a month since the first sound readings, All I got was a look from the service writer that I was annoying him for stopping by asking for any form of an update from Star. Work order is still open and still no answers all the while it rattles away.

I have a planned move back to the NW in the next few weeks and would rather not have this let loose during the 1200 mile drive back.

I'm sure your SM was given the same message mine got, we will call an let you know when we have a fix or as I say its don't call us well call you the 3th Tuesday of next week...

My engine sounds like complete garbage in the 11-1800rpm, range. No tap at idle just in that specific rpm range. I’ll wait a little longer for the guidance from Ram to come out to see if they will be doing some sort of CSP for vehicles in/out of warranty but if not it’s Hamilton time.

I’ve seen person after person after person talk about the tap at the higher rpm’s, mine included, and have seen a few who’s dealership changed out the hole valve train only for the noise to still be there. I’ve took a mechanic stethoscope and poked all around and cannot pinpoint where the sound is coming from. I’m 100% convinced it’s just the harmonics of the CGI motor, they did after all shave out a bunch of material as a way to cut some weight which I can only assume was to chase the very stringent CAFE standards. Mine makes absolutely no extra noise at idle and both UOAs I’ve done have come back normal, truck pulls like a freight train and doesn’t miss a beat. I quit listening for it, I’ve got a bunch of miles left on my powertrain warranty, I’m just gonna love my truck.

If it did it since day 1 I would feel the same, but it only started last year.

This has likely been mentioned before but just in case....
It is very very common for these 19+'s to start wearing the push rods... They are quite easy to get to for inspection.
