Lets talk skid plates

I currently don't have any and I'm thinking I want to add some or start a DIY project. I spend a good amount of time on gravel and rocky backcountry roads and I already miss them. Anyone have a full set or pics of what I might be looking at? I have access to free sheet steal and kind of want to make my own but would like at least a pic of what I may be attempting to duplicate.

Being a retired mech engineer drawings would even be better or rough dimensions. I can work with that. Heck I may go as far as to find someone locally and ask if I can lay under their truck a bit and take some dimensions.

The skid plates on the power wagon and off-road models work really well and are well positioned.

If you really want to do it yourself I would base it off those.

That said the ram engineers spent a lot of time developing something you can buy and bolt right onto your truck.

and with that said..... as I mentioned, I'm a retired mech engineer, I was in charge of a fab shop for more than a decade, have free material and a crap ton of free time. I love doing projects like this. Would they be as nice as the factory over priced ones, NO. But probably just as effective. I can only camp, ATV and trail run so much. I need something to do in my spare time .

I will look into those models. I think there's a new Power Wagon in our park.

look at a CJC offroad intercooler skid and build one of those out of 3/16 or 1/4" steel. they are a very nice design but not a skid plate more of a debris guard. For someone with fab skills should be an easy project.

I know if I had access to the equipment and materials for free I would be making a bed rack. If you look at what is available dethloff manufacturing or nuthouse etc they are always backordered and $$$$.

Is the intercooler gaurd aluminum? Judging by the tig weld i would assume so

yes 1/8" aluminum so pretty light. Nice for what is designed to do and advertised to do but not a skid which it clearly says it is not.

I ended up taking mine off as it got pretty buggered up in moab on some very minor contact with soft sand steel is real.....

my truck has the factory T-case skid plate that came with the snowplow kit next time change the oil ill pop it off and send you some pictures with the best measurements I can around the bolt holes I would recommend no less than 3/8 plate

the stock one is 1/8th plate it's not very robust, but the mounting is pretty good across the crossmembers
