I purchased a 2019 Ram 2500 hd used and previous owner lost one of the fobs Dealer quoted my wife about 300.00 to get a new fob and have it programed.
I got a new one from a dealer on the web (well respected for their equipment) and each fob tested before being sold. Exact same fob same FCC code and part number and asked the dealer to program it and was advised it probably will not program as it is a off market piece but they could get me a new one from the factory . Sure as expected it was not programable.
I called the company of the fob and was told this was a typical ploy to get the customer to purchase from the dealer., and since all the FCC and Part # were the same, no reason not to be programed
Has this happened to any one else?

Purchased my truck new, so I have two FOB’s. On other vehicle’s (not Ram) I’ve purchased FOB’s online and had the dealership program them. I would go to a different dealership to have done.

Yes, my dealer pulled this crap with my 2014 3500. Not only did they warn me it would cost me $65 whether they could program it or not but they also cut the key even though they couldn't program it. Scam, scam, scam. I haven't been back to them since then. I hate them.

We have 2020 Ram 2500 Tradesman. Came with 2 key fobs. Called dealer near us to get key cut in case we lose a fob or lock one in truck. He said if fob in truck it won’t lock. First try we left fob in truck but pulled out key. tried to locks doors, 3 beeps and wouldn’t lock. We tried several more scenarios and truck locked with fob inside. Even put 2nd fob in house away from truck, etc. Not sure what happened first time. So you basically can get locked out of truck. Are we doing something wrong? As I had hoped you could not get locked out of truck.

I know with the passive entry system if you try 3 times it will lock even with the key in the cab on the third time. Doesn't sound like what you are doing here though.

We actually locked the doors about 5 times trying to figure out if you can lock the doors with the fob inside and you can. I thought this new technology would prevent you from locking the doors with the fob in the car.

I know thats a load of crap as my wife leaves her purse in the truck with the second fob and i can still lock the truck

If the dealer wont do it then just go to a lock smith the local one here will sell an oem fob and program it for about 20% less than the dealer

If you leave both key fobs in your truck and step out and lock doors, are you locked out?
we were experimenting with the key fobs to see if there was a way to lock yourself out. Sorry if I’m not stating correctly. I think we will just buy a key and have it hidden in case we lock both fobs inside. Also if only one of us is driving truck and lock fob in truck we will need a way to get in.

If you have a fob on you outside the truck and there is one inside it does not stop you from locking the truck. If you don't have a fob on you it should honk several times and not lock. It worked for me the one time I almost locked my keys in.

One is in the house the other in the truck

Yeah, that is not working as intended! Does your wife have a faraday cage for a purse? LOL
Nope but i have found you need to be within 3 ft of the ignition for the fob to work so bei g her purse is more than 3ft away it could be the issue

I’ve been thinking of doing the same...I think we should be able to get a regular key(generic Chrysler key blank) cut at any locksmith and then hide it somewhere under the truck
