I have an issue with my 2022 Ram 2500. Only while towing, the tailgate drops, randomly. This does not happen when nothing is plugged in to the 7 pin connector. It doesn't matter if it's a 12k lb fifth wheel or a few hundred pound trailer on the hitch, as long as something is plugged in to the 7 pin, it drops at some point during driving. I also have a surround view camera hookup that is no longer detected when plugged in.
This all started after failing to put the pin in my fifth wheel hitch in March, twice... and the thing dropped off the back (going slow thank God), first time destroying the tailgate, second time destroying a bunch of stuff around the license plate (because the tailgate was off). Had to replace the tailgate and some body work on the truck bed. The back of the camera plug had lost part of the plastic housing, so the truck side wire that plugs into the back of the connector wouldn't click in to anything and could just barely plug in to the pins. Despite that, I tried the connection. At that time, it seemed like the surround view camera system was detected. But not long after that, same trip, the wire slipped off and from then on, I noticed the camera system no longer being detected, and the tailgate dropping randomly. I kind of wonder if at this point, as the camera wire slipping off caused a short, threw the codes outlined below, and the computer (BCM) just hasn't recovered.
I went ahead and replaced the part that houses both the camera plug and 7 pin plug (sits right of the license plate when looking at it). However, that didn't fix anything. Checked fuses. Looked for trouble codes, and found the following codes being thrown. The descriptions provided here are what AI is telling me, but AI is only right about 50-60% of the time on this kind of stuff from what I'm finding:
So, I've been trying to figure this out myself. I can't afford $1000 every time they don't find the right thing. I found they missed a wire, the brown one, where there was copper showing. I fixed that. No change. So then I started using AI to help diagnose, measuring continuity, voltages, across several connectors. Between two AIs, they agreed it was a bad sensor in the right side latch, telling the computer that it is open despite it not being open, and causing all the issues. So, I took a chance and replaced it. So far, no change. Well, at least, the codes are still there (haven't tried towing to see if camera works, or tailgate drops - too cold). But I'm thinking part of the issue is the codes not ever being cleared.
I've tried two OBDII readers, which supposedly clear BCM codes. Both say they cannot be cleared. So, I'm at a crossroad... Go back to the dealer, ask them to clear the codes or diagnose further, or figure out what the next step should be using the brain - trust here. Sorry that was really long. Any thoughts?
