Is It Me or My Cargo Camera

Love my '22 3500, hands down it's the BEST HD diesel truck I've owned since my first one in '99.

However, the cargo camera when used for hooking up to our goose neck isn't really what I was expecting. It seems to be SD and not HD, making it difficult to use most of the time. The black spray in and black trailer hitch makes it difficult to see and most of the time I find myself squinting at the screen, and the zoom in function does not help at all.

I know I'm getting older, but has anyone else noticed this? If so, have you come up with a fix? I am thinking about a little piece of DOT reflective tap or light colored flag for the trailer's hitch.

Have had the same experience....thought, oh I'll add that to the order and it'll help when hooking up the trailer. I'm already not using it anymore and I only have had the truck for a few months. Shadows into the bed seem to be my biggest culprit - just couldn't tell when the coupler was right over the ball...found out I'm still making the minimal adjustments as if I didn't have the camera.

Old school still works well...I know which depression in the tailgate to line the coupler up with when turning around and go from there.

I have used it several times when hauling random stuff in the bed to check on it - but honestly that was more out of curiosity than necessity

Thanks for the replies, I guess I am glad to know I am not alone.

Crazy to think the '22 camera is worse than the '19. Maybe it's a result of the supply chain issues? Crazy to think in this day and ago with the camera technology these cameras seem to have taken a 10 year step backwards.

I am thinking about getting those alignment helps as well, I am worried about overshooting the ball and jacking up my tailgate, which seems VERY easy to do.

I think there are different cameras depending on if the truck has surround camera option or not. My 2020 with surround view is very clear

I have the surround cameras, and like @2019_Ram said, there's a noticeable difference between his two trucks. Maybe your 2020 has the better cameras?

Twice now, I have caught the 22 when the 12" screen crashed show the rear view camera crystal clear and then revert back to poor quality as things finished booting. Like it is a software restriction causing the reduction in quality. Think of it as displaying the cameras in HD for a few seconds and then only SD.

I have the same thought. Very grainy. Can't see hardly anything but I can at least see that nothing has fallen out, which was the original reason for me getting it.

Side note: you guys can zoom your cargo camera??? I can't. Only time the zoom option is in there is when the tailgate cam is on.

I had a ‘19 and the cameras were very clear. I hope the ‘22 I ordered isn’t a downgrade.

I have the 8.4 w/o nav and no zoom and its grainy

My 2500 2019 no surround 8.4 back up camera was clearly better than my 22 3500 with 12” and surround. JMO.

These are what mine look like. I will say at night they are not as clear as i would like, daytime is pretty good I think. My 2017 8.4 was maybe better. The 2019 and 2021 were definitely better at night.

I'm fairly certain the resolution on the non-nav screens is much lower than the nav screens so that may be part of your issue. That's based on this document I found.

I do not see where NAV makes a difference - looks like the 8.4 just has a lower resolution period.

The plus is the NAV and the non-plus is the non-nav for the different screen sizes. At least that is the way I interpret the document. If you download the document it's easier to
distinguish which is which. I'll try to post another screenshot.
