Impact Driver for lug nuts

I just pulled the front wheels to grease my hub "unit bearings" thru the abs hole. 60,000 miles, and although they weren't completely dry, the grease I could see in there was not very fluid. Everything on this truck is big. The caliper bolts required a "BFH" application. The calipers seemed as big as my boots. I have several Dewalt 20 volt batteries so got their XR High Torque 1/2" hog ring jobber . Supposed to do 1200 ft/lbs. Popped the lugs right off on its high setting. It has three setting and the mid level tightens them up to about 85 ft/lbs or so. I finish them with a torque wrench.

Thought I’d pop this in here. I have Ryobi tools and just picked up their brushless impact wrench with this deal. $99, usually $170


BTW, that hack works on any of their tools if you need something else. I’ve been happy with their stuff for my needs.
 
At home, I use my old 18v Dewalt 1/2" impact wrench, it has never failed to remove a lug nut.
For on the road, like MillMutt, I bought a Harbor Freight 24" breaker bar on sale and had a 22mm impact socket. It stores easy and loosens the lug nuts easy. Once broken loose, those lug nuts spin off with your fingers. I have replaced my OEM capped lug nuts with solid steel ones. After a couple of tire rotations, the caps were already starting to split (tire stores call it "bulging"). Ever tried taking a capped lug nut off when it starts spinning on itself?

yea tin covered nuts suck..I normally replace mine with cast gorilla or mcguard nuts....
 
I don't know about y'all but I've read a lot about how the OEM dodge lug nuts can snap if being over torqued, so I'm a bit hesitant to give her the ole "3 ugga duggas".

Yeah, me too. So I only just snug them with the impact (after hand starting them). And I finish with my torque wrench. Same with everything I work on except the lugs on our diesel pusher (475ft lbs). I use a torque bar for that.
 
I do not let air or battery powered tools touch my nuts. Hand tools only! :p
I break them loose with a breaker bar and then use my dewalt to zip them off and when I put them on I turn them a few threads by hand and put my dewalt on setting 1 and zip them gently snug and then use a torque wrench to finish the job..lug nuts that is :).

This is what I've used for 20 years and they're very accurate, most of the time the torque wrench just needs to bump lugs, and that's if at all.

Money well spent in my option.

@Dieseldan723 I will hit the road with my Milwaukee, 2 M18 batteries (w/ charger), socket and the torque extension. I've had the M18 1/2" drive for a few years and it's well worth the price in my opinion, I'll most likely need to put in my "last will and testament".​

 
M18 1/2" Impact FTW. A few years back I came close to investing in air tools and a buddy told me about these. Already having a ton of Milwaukee tools, I picked one up. Awesome tool and one of my favorite. I manage a Class 8 diesel repair shop and it busts lug nuts that were put on with the large Ingersoll Rand 1" impact gun (big two handers).

And aside from busting lug nuts, these makw suspension work a breeze. With 1400 ft.lbs of busting torque, even when using extensions up to 12" or swivel adapters, it has the torque to get through just about anything. I wouldn't suggest using it to torque your lugs though, it can pull studs through rotors on smaller passenger vehicles. The price may seem a little steep but it is beyond worth it. And a XC5 battery far exceeds a single suspension job. Also highly recommend the Sunex impact socket sets on Amazon!
 
I have an older 1/2 snap on 18V that I use, but in this scenario, I would toss the small Milwaukee in the truck along with a breaker bar. Crack them loose, then spin them off with the impact driver, then reverse the process. Unless you can justify the use for the big impact after this trip, then go for it.
 
I have the Ryobi 1/2 impact. It will bust some nuts!! Took my suspension nuts off with no problem.

I also bought the Ryobi because all my other tools are Ryobi.
I also bought a set of torque sticks.
