Looking at a few 2500's. Gas and diesel. Found some good deals on both fuel types. If I go with the Hemi, how many miles is too many for buying used and is there a known average mileage where you are up for a re build? Not looking to shell out 30k for a 2019 2500 gas engine and then rebuild the engine after 6 months.

Bought a 2017 with 153K on it last spring. Stock engine and transmission. It’s been really good the 5K miles we have put on it, 50% towing our 10K 5th wheel.

It needs a little love this spring, but all in all no complaints.

I got 105K miles on mine in 4 1/2 years
I do regular maintenance on it, including the air filter. Just changed the plugs at 100K. That was a pain
No issues so far. Have towed with it several times

I bought my 2020 Hemi 2500 in 2022 with 63k miles on it and now I have +95k miles.

Work I’ve done to it:
Coolant flush
Shocks
Thermostat
Regular services

I would not be surprised to need wheel bearings before long and will likely flush the coolant again in the next year or two.

I really like my truck.

I have changed shocks, track bars, and steering linkage on mine as well.
Probably need wheel bearings before long.
Gonna do fluid and filters on tranny, T case and axles this spring when it warms up. I think coolant is supposed to be good for 10 years

Yes the coolant is rated for 10 years.

I looked in my coolant overflow/tank and didn’t like what I saw in it so I decided to have it flushed.

Also, there seems to be an issue with heater cores getting plugged, so I thought a bit of prevention would be a good idea.

EGR coolers can cause coolant to break down sooner due the higher temperature it’s exposed to.

IMHO any thing at or over 200K miles on a used truck is risky due to the Hemi cam & lifter issues I read about at least 3-6 times a month...

It’s a crap shoot. I bought a truck once that had 50k miles and ended up having 4 major transmission repairs in under 50k miles.

I'd be more conerned with idle hours than miles. If it looks like it's idled more than 30% of its run time, I might look else where. I'm only at 4400 miles and hovering around 17%. I've seen a few 5.7's that have had valvetrain failure over 40%. Most of the ones I've seen were municipal vehicles (police, fire, etc).

Find a virgin! Not a whore!! Condition is king!!! Low mileage will never overcome neglect and poor engineering...
30 yrs ago I had a LOF job on a customer's 30kmi Camry. Open hood. Wtf? Thats the Factory filter! Drop drain plug. Mmm, Chocolate Pudding! I tell service writer. He brings to owners attention. SHE(around 50yo)responds, I didn't know that had to be changed? She traded it in that day. Some clueless individual ended up with mega chub thinking they scored. Wrong! Sexy whore had rotten internals!
I always bring a creeper, gloves, rag and my best flashlight. I look for panel paint match from a distance, nooks and crannies that the pressure washer and sucker sauce don't hit. Oil fill sludge or cap condensation, dipstick(s) clean, everything else clean n clear? Even then it's still a crap shoot. And we haven't even crawled into the Bs wiring yet...
Take your time and look beyond the lipstick. And the odometer. Happy hunting!
