How do you transport your dogs

We’ve done it 3 ways:
1) 2 kids in car seats and 2 dogs, folded the 40 on the 60/40 up and everyone was happy
2) 3 kids in car seats, both dogs laid down on the floor. Not ideal.
3) current configuration is a Gunner kennel under a topper. We just did this for a 2 week 4000 mile road trip. The dog in the kennel loved it. It was obvious the tight area lessened her anxiety compared to in the cab. Cleanup was way better. Get some extra tie downs and offset the kennel to a side. We had so much crap in the bed the tie downs were minor inconveniences once packed.

Gunner kennels are expensive, but they’re well made. Just be prepared, if you order one it will probably take a month to get to you.

That's like the Cummins of dog kennels

I have some experience with gunner kennels so I know their quality and I know they are crash tested.

I have never tried the 60/40 fold. I am sure she will fit just fine in the folded up part of the truck. I guess my other concern is the dog hair but that is more of a personal problem.

Do you have any pictures of your configuration under the truck cap?

Most of my dogs have rode in the box no cap no leash they didnt mind when the gooseneck was on my newest dog (wifes dog) is a pug no letting him ride in the box unfortunatly

I live in California (see below) and I believe this is illegal on top of the fact that I don't want to do this for a 6hr drive.

Two vehicles lol. We have an old caravan they ride in but we have two newfoundlands.

This is literally what we are trying to avoid. I will put her in the cab before I take two vehicles

I have never heard any parks refusing a dog breed

I personally don't have any experience with this but I do live in California so I COMPLETELY understand, just haven't frequented those parks yet. I am sure the San's (Diego, Barbara, Francisco) will be the parks with this problem.

No pictures. It’s exactly what you would expect to see if you opened the tailgate and cap to see a kennel to the left and all the crap 3 kids needed for 2 weeks borderline falling out packed around the kennel/straps.
You say family of 5? Does that include the dog? Do you have 3 seats in the front? I have 3 kids and front buckets- the dogs had to go in the back.
I wonder if the kennel could be safely strapped in the towed camper? I assume it’s illegal, but it may not be. That would be the most convenient.

No 2 legged kids anymore, so this is how our furry creatures roll in the back of a megacab. Ruffland is another good reasonably priced crate option.

the ones that rode in the box were unhappy in the cab and loved riding in the box

I have two 70 lbs boxers that only shed when they see automotive carpet. They also flop around a lot, claws flailing and scratching things up, until they find their spot after which they are perfectly behaved. They are not allowed in the cab of my truck.

I will transport them in one of their crates, front center of the truck bed. I only do this in town or backroads to the place we usually camp, the vet, etc. We kennel them if we are going more than an hour away on busy highways. My wife just got a JKU and if we can solve the dog hair issue in the cargo area that is where they will go on longer trips and/or when we take the Jeep as a 2nd vehicle on camping trips.

Is it ok to put them in a kennel in the truck bed if it is secured and there is no topper? So just in a kennel in the open bed, tied down at the front.

All I can say is check your local laws regarding dogs in the bed of the truck. I think as long as they are kenneled its legal in most areas. With all the people who feel entitled to poke their nose is stuff thy should stay out of..its better to be the one who has all the facts.

Why wouldn't it be? Dogs have been riding in open truck beds as long as there have been trucks. The only reason I use the crate is one of them gets scared easily and prefers it otherwise they would be going au naturale. They have plenty of room to move around, are not in the direct wind, and I'm not taking them on the freeway at high speeds.

Dogs are dogs, not kids. It's totally fine to go the extra mile as if they were human but it's also OK to let them be dogs too. My dogs live a good life but then I also catch them doing nasty dog stuff in the backyard.

From what research I have done, it is legal to transport a dog in the bed of a truck provided its kenneled and secured.

Now with that said I have seen farm dogs in the back of flat beds standing on a tool box or AUX fuel tank going down the freeway ay 75 mph in Northern Az....that would make me nervous as hell...

I once saw a guy with his dog untethered on his flat dump bed, holding on for dear life. That crosses the line. But I've also seen people attacked online for asking for dog house dimensions for their breed because "if you have to let your dog outside unattended than you shouldn't own a dog." It's like the world has gone bi polar, people can't just use reasonable judgement anymore. Dogs are dogs. And I swear if I hear one more childless millennial tell me they understand being a parent because they have dogs....

I remember my mom using her right arm as a seat belt when we stopped hard in her 1971 GTO.... that's not acceptable anymore and in some states its not acceptable to have unsecured dogs in the bed of the truck.

I have seen some guys who have their dogs with them in the rock crawlers....they flop the rig on its roof and all you see is the dog squirt out and run for safety...usually looking back from the top of the rock wagging tail wondering why the human is still in there haha

I choose not to live in those states. Kids are kids, dogs are dogs.
