How do you keep pack rats away?

I feel your pain. We lived in a mountain cabin in the woods also, and both my truck and jeep were under attack by field mice, chipmunks, and squirrels. They ate the injector wiring on the jeep, and a lot of the trucks hood insulation and battery blankets. It's a real Bearcat to stop them.
I tried most everything, but the dryer sheets pushed into all crevices in the engine compartment seemed to work best. Believe me when I say I tried everything. I finally cleared out the garage so the truck would fit , then parked the jeep in the 12x24 utility shed. No more problems.
Keeping the hood cracked open, with a light source works also.
Mother nature will find a way, and she's relentless. Good luck brother.

One thing I've learned about moving from the "Big City" in the Sonoran Desert to the Colorado Rockies, is that the price tag comes with rodents attached (Not much better than sleeping with scorpions, but Hey!..).

I use the repel method as my first line of defense and traps as my in-case line of defense. I found the Bell-Howell Ultrasonic units work very well. Covers 400 sq. ft., so I have "a few" around my garages to keep them out of my garages. The traps are good ole fashioned mouse traps with a peanut stuffed in the cup (peanuts will go the distance in time vs. cheese or peanut butter). I haven't trapped a single deer mouse in the garage since I started using the ultrasonic units, but I tried the peanut in the trap method and caught 10 deer mice, with the same wedged peanut, below our master bedroom deck. Nasty little vermin! I let the ravens or maggies have 'em after I dispatched them.

I almost forgot! I actually have a "Sniff and Find" method, as well, that uses two Miniature Schnauzers that love to rat!

You must have them City Mice LOL! I had tried all them methods with no Joy.
Blame the manufactures for using Vegetable based electrical wire Insulation.
