How much idle time is too much?

Five years of ownership and my truck thinks it’s been idling 15% of the time. No issues, no tick just trying to gauge others

Mine’s a 2017 with 110,000 miles. Lost track of hours since I’ve had multiple clusters swapped in, and they were skipping numbers anyway. If I had to guess, my idle hours are probably 4x as much as my drive hours. I always remote start both 15 minute sessions in the summer and winter, and there is a ton of sitting in the truck in park with engine running.
No issues, odd noises, or ticks, and I also use whatever oil is cheapest at the time for oil change, and always run it till the oil percentage gauge is at 0 or longer (usually 8-9000 miles).

I’ll have to get some pics of some of the Hemi and Cummins Rams in our work fleet, out of curiosity. They stay at the plant, and the plant speed limit is 10 mph from job to job, and they are running all day long, with the bare minimum on the maintenance.

Interesting

Do the gassers ever end up with the Hemi tic?

Here’s mine I got the truck with 63k miles on it and Ram had no records of it’s services.

However, I use PUP at 5k intervals myself.

The second picture shows my idle time growth from 79k to 89k miles.

@Jimmy07
What weight oil do you use?

That report is very confidence inspiring!!! :)

I wonder if the ecu/computer has record of the hours that is viewable outside of what is in the cluster?

not really. I believe I need to reprogram my remote start. It’s the start-x brand and occasionally when I enter the truck after it’s been running with remote start, it will turn off. And only happens when it is remote started. Customer service with start-x said it’s related to their module that something didn’t take with the download process. as I didn’t have the issue before installing. Other than that I love the truck.

You are the first person here so far to break 20% you’re at 30% idle hours. No issues I assume?

I thought I was idling a lot, but this thread makes me feel better
I would also like to send another sample of oil to black stone. I use amsoil signature series and normally when I am roughly 5k in on an oil change, I notice the hemi tick. About a week ago I switched to pup. I believe this is the second time since owning the truck I’ve used PUP, this time around I wanted to see if it keeps the tick away longer or not to switch back to amsoil. my issue is pup takes a week to get and amsoil always over nights to my address. My next option would be to go a thicker viscosity due to the extreme temperatures here.

I believe last year we had a month straight of 110 or 115 or higher day time highs and over a month of 99 or higher.

But to answer your question, no real issues just trying to perfect something to my likening lol.

Is it just a startup tick? I used to get those around 5k with the mopar filter but switching to the wix xp allowed me to go full oil change interval without getting startup tick.

I have been using WIX xp majority of the oil changes. However, With this oil change I went with the Walmart.com SRT oil change package (6 qts of 0w40 and oil filter) then added an extra quart. So the larger mopar oil filter for the 392.

I have always used the mopar srt filter since 1first oil change. It is a much better filter with a higher by pass valve plus the dealer said it will not affect warranty. I am courious I have used th PUP since new but was thinking switching to amsoil signature oil. Was there a difference ? PUP is good oil and on par with Amsoil signature.
