Hello,

Has anyone tried (or is it even possible) to take the HUD functionality of the Ram 1500 and put it into the 2500? I thought for sure the 2024s would have added it as an option, but it still isn't available to order with that feature. I had a 2022 1500 before upgrading to my 2500 HD and I must say, I really do miss this feature.

Figured I would ask people that are much smarter than me if it has been done before and/or if it is even possible? If not, does anyone have any good alternatives?

Thanks
Jeremy

I have a HUD in my Corvette. The windshield is made for the HUD to make it more visible. I’m not 100% but my guess is if it was even possible you would need to have the right glass to see it well.

That said I highly doubt you would ever get that close. 1500s and HDs are totally different trucks. Nothing would fit right for one and the computer would not be able to control it. Nothing in the HD truck would be setup for any wiring like that either.

There really shouldn't be much that special about the glass itself. The thing you have to get right is the reflection/viewing angle. You can turn your phone on and read it through the reflection in the glass without issue if you have the right angle.

Of course, heads up display screens are usually made to have specific information shown that is large and easy to read.

It would take some serious modification to have it done right. Heavily modify the dash by cutting a hole in it to mount the display. Trying to make the hole look right. I'd have to agree with the previous post about the the 1500 dash being different and probably not compatible. You could probably use the same screen with some modification but then you need to figure out the electronic interface. Maybe a customized os to talk via obd port.

All in all it would be awesome, but I bet crazy hard to do and even harder to do right.

HUD didn’t come until 2021, but there’s only one part number for it- 68381578AC.
But, there’s a bit more to it than that, and being that you have a RHD conversion, it might not be feasible to do. The dash cover is different for the HUD. The cowl above the instrument cluster is raised to allow clearance of the HUD unit, and there is a “bucket” in the dash that the HUD mounts into. The windshield is also different to allow the projection of the HUD, and I’m not sure if it’s just on the LHD side of the windshield, so a RHD version of that windshield might not exist either.
You also need the correct instrument cluster, that has the extra port that the HUD plugs into.

I bought an after market one for my 3500 but my son took it and put it on his rav4 and it works good. It plugs into the obd port . It also comes with a peice of reflective film but he didn’t put it and can still see it good. I bought it on amazon for about 30. Dollars

There shouldn’t be something special about the glass yet the auto manufacturers use special glass. Maybe they know something?

Sure, regular glass might work but the specially treated glass works better. Angles can certainly make a difference, but it’s not like you have much of a choice as you’re not designing the dash and windshield, you get what is there.

In any case, this is all really the simplest part of the problem. There are far bigger issues trying to get this going. Not a simple parts grab / install.

It's not the glass that's different, but the windshield is definitely different. It's got a polarization film built in on the inside of the glass.

Get a HUD vehicle with a non-HUD replacement windshield and the display will be significantly dimmer and less crisp due to much less of the light source being reflected back to the driver.
