Headlamps & DRLs - rant and fixes

I've only recently signed onto HD Rams though I've been reading as a lurker for a while. I recently traded up my 2018 4G 2500 Laramie to a 2019 4.5G 3500 Limited - Canadian spec in the frozen north of Alberta. Fairly happy so far but there has been one major annoyance that I feel the need to ask answers and rant about. Skip the first para if you're not into rants...

WTF does some non-motor brained genius in Ottawa think they are providing the way of safety with Daylight Running Light legislation? DRLs have become common place all over the world and started to good effect in Scandinavia (check out Saabs and Volvos from the 60s& 70s) and I can see that a vehicle with DRLs stands out more than a vehicle without. Unfortunately Canada applied this idea with usual Liberal sledgehammer to crush a nut and the situation my 2019 LED equipped Ram 3500 finds itself in, is have the headlights on all the time. Way to go Canada! You just made every motorcyclist in the world (where there have been no lights off option for a few years) less visible and more vulnerable. Apparently this is because the DRLs fitted to 4.5G Rams are not bright enough to be DRLs (where clearly the amber DRLs on the 4G trucks were fine). That also means that you will be able to see when darkness falls which is good, but if you don't have the switch set to 'auto' you won't have any tail lights showing (that bit I place firmly in FCA's court - which genius thought not having tail lights with headlight was a good idea?). But, if you go into a bank of fog and think 'Hey, I have fog lights! I should turn off my headlights to cut down glare and use the edge viewing fog lights to reach safety' you can't. You can't even turn them off by putting it in park. The only way to turn of full power, dipped beam, headlights when the engine is running its to put on that novelty anachronism (in an auto box vehicle) the parking brake. Why did any of that need to change from the 4G? Has the ignoramus in Ottawa never driven in fog? or behind a dick with no tail lights on? or needed to not shine a million candela at the camper next to them in the dark as you can't turn off the f****** headlights?

I took it to a dealer who said they couldn't fix the headlights to be on only when the switch says headlights because of the lighting regulations They hinted it could be done another way. Is the other way using the AlfaOBD and will that work on a 2019 4.5G truck? Their ad and Google play mentions some blocking software post 2018.

I'd quite like the fog lamps on when high beam is on, too.

Thanks,

I'm in the same boat. This is mostly covered in the AlphaOBD thread. You need the AlphaOBD app, the OBD Link MX+ connector and the harness from Kaodtech. I have yet to buy the harness. Your looking at just under $300 CDN for all the items. But the upside is that you can apparently change the DRL country to US instead of Canada and you will then be able to use the accent strips for the DRLs and turn your headlights off if you want. U can also turn off the fog light dropout. 'Mericaaaaa!

Thanks for confirming - I haven't found the headlights in the AlfaOBD thread yet. Where are you getting your harness from? Direct?

Handily, I use a Mac...

Only place to get it is right from kaodtech.com. The exchange rate is murder on it. I messaged them hoping to get a little coupon code to help out with shipping or something but no response. It'll be 100 bucks by the time it gets to your door with exchange. Best price for the OBD Link is on amazon.ca.

Just ordered the harness, $95 CDN with shipping.

If I set my DRL to on my LED headlights will come on a 30% power in addition to the accent strips. If I set to DRL off then I have just the accent strips. US truck when running auto. Does Canada's go full power for DRL?

To me it looks like 30% power to high beams with also low beams on full AND accent strips. Everything in the headlight is lit up. I'll set it to US region and use the strips as the DRLs, that's plenty.

I actually just went out and tried to confirm which lights are which. What does the center cluster of 4 lights even do in the Limited, is it also accent or HighBeam? I need to park infront of a window sometime and see which ones the HighBeams are.

I have the Laramie LED lights. I think your limited lights are a whole nother animal. Your lights turn with your steering, right?

Is there a way to turn the DRL off completely, including the led accent strip with Alpaobd?

I have the same question! They look as if the are DRLs; they certainly don't switch on in high beam.

I was going to come post a similar thread.
Bighorn with LEDs. I like the DRL normally, however when going into the woods for hunting in the morning trying to make a little impact as normal I just discovered that the 'O' circle on the far left doesn't actually turn out the DRLs.
Is there a way I can turn the lights off? I don't want to have to mess with AlphaOBD and normally I just leave it in Auto and the lights do their thing just fine.

My old GM product, gasp, used to work with everything in Auto and a flick to the 'O' turned everything out. Flip back to on or Auto and came back to normal.

There is no factory equipped setting on the truck that will disable the signature lighting. If the truck is running, they are on. You must use AlfaOBD to disable them, or configure them differently.

Ahh, darn!

Can AlphaOBD set them up to disable them only when I flip it to the 'O'? Otherwise I like them.

No, but you can configure them so they are actually the DRLs. That way you can toggle them on/off with the DRL radio setting.

I did some switching and reading and fuse removing at dusk yesterday. This is a 2019 CAN spec Limited.

The DRLs appear to be full power low/dipped headlights, accent strips and the 4 cluster with the switch in the O position.

Parking/sidelight position reduces the output of the 4 cluster but leaves every thing else at 100%. Headlights and 4 cluster only go out with the ignition system in Off, leaving the accents strips only.

On or Auto (in the dark) will look the same as the parking light position, but remains fully on if the ignition button is turned to off.

The only way to turn off the headlights with the motor running is to apply the parking brake in Park.

Interestingly despite all this 'safety' at the front so everyone can see you coming (and drown out the motorcycles ), however many lights at whatever switch position showing to the front, THE TAIL LIGHTS REMAIN OFF WHEN THE SWITCH IS AT 'O'. So you can merrily drive around in the dark with good forward vision with the switch at O wondering why you nearly get rear ended at every slow-down point... Way to make things less safe FCA!

You will also find that with the engine off, if you select parking lights, you will be dazzled by the dashboard illumination, which cannot be dimmed in this mode but does switch off after a period of time.

If we change settings to US with the computer or other programs, I suspect the DRLs will be accent strip and 4 cluster at full brightness

So much for advances in safety...
