Hard Shifts all of a sudden to 2nd and 6th gear - 68RFE

Hey guys. I have a 22 with 27k miles that just started doing this. 2nd and 6th hard shifts. Did anyone figure out what's causing it and what stopped it? Just trying to figure out if I should give it time to work itself out or to bring it to the dealer to get checked out. Just a little back story. We went on a trip for a week in the mountains and I used the exhaust break alot due to the inclines. I got back and started driving without it and thats when it started. The temperatures also have recently been colder. I don't know if either of those things have anything to do with it , but I thought I'd mention it in case someone else had the same situation to try and figure out a pattern of when it is happening.

Well my experience wasn't great. At 35k miles my transmission failed.... took 50 days and no loaner to get a new one installed under warranty. I'm less than pleased with RAM.

Thanks for the reply. It seems to have gotten better the last couple of days. Did it ever get better after the initial time it started happening?

Yes it did after they reset it and made it relearn. Would be worth checking to see if you truck is posting any subtle engine codes though. My tranny didnt completely fail. It started sounding somewhat harmonic at certain RPMs and then i pulled a code that signaled bigger problems.

I'll check and see if I have any engine codes. Hopefully it'll finish clearing up and I won't have any more issues. And if I do hopefully it is before the warranty is up lol. Thanks again for the info. If I have more issues I'll post an update here for anyone else that may be having the same problem.

Hopefully you have better luck than I did!

Is there any more information regarding this? Mine has been doing this for a few months now and trying to get into the dealership for a diagnostic has been difficult. The truck will hang in first then shift to second pretty hard. It will continue shifting hard and even going from drive to reverse and back very hard. I have to shut the truck off then restart it to stop the hard shifting. Every time the tranny does hang in the gear then shift hard it has been throwing the engine light. Then a few days later the light goes out... Then a week or so it hangs up again, shifts hard and throws the light again. Very frustrating!! Just wondering if anyone has had this issue resolved. I checked the tranny fluid level and it is full....

Mine hasnt been an issue with the new transmission. Ive got about 18,000 miles on the second tranny and so far its seemed fine.

Mine cleared up on its own and it has been shifting smooth. It's been about 10k miles since it cleared up.

i have 70k and warranty expires in 2 weeks and my truck just started doing the same thing. it's a 2019. CEL was for Trans Pressure Switch but the dealer said it was no longer active when they scanned it. I have an appt for July 31st with the dealer so we'll see what happens.

I have the 8spd and just started experiencing weird shifts/jerks and clunks. Just went over 42k battery died the following day, then started experiencing this once battery was swapped. Noticed my speedo is off now too. Just recalibrated with the procal snap a few days ago but still experiencing harsh shifts in and out of park/reverse and some shifting.

So an update, my trans was shifting weird and on super hot days it would slam into gear...warranty was about to run out and i was honest with my dealer and said either you or me is putting a transmission in this truck. I described the symptoms and said the trans is not gonna hang in much longer and it'd be really cool if you stood by the warranty and put one in it.
I am shocked but they did. They put a new one in under warranty. I could not believe it.

That's great to hear they stepped up and took care of it. My 2nd tranny hesitates pretty bad until it gets up to operating temp if i dont get the throttle into it heavy enough so we will see. I'm at 60,000 miles and have 3 years left on my powertrain. I'm at 25,000 miles with the second so I've still got some time to see if it grenades again...

I have a 22 with the Cummins, currently around 32k miles and my transmission is starting to act up. When I was towing my camper last weekend I was getting some really hard shifts. I believe it was when going into 3rd and 4th gear. And now in the morning when I take off from my house I’ll get on the highway, set my cruise at 62mph and I get a really weird shudder for about half mile and then it stops.

Got the truck back from the dealer. They found a faulty Output Shaft Speed Sensor and replaced it. So far so good, nice smooth shifts now!! The code was P0721. Its been a couple months now, so far so good!!

Dropped my 6 week old 2500 Cummins off at the dealer today for this issue. Only 6000 miles on it! 5 year, 50000 mile warrenty so they have a long time to have to deal with this if it's not fixed properly. This started yesterday just normal driving in town. Hard shifting through all gears but much worse going into 4th, 5th, and 6th. It seems like its searching for the gear, slams into gear then bucks back and forth before settling down. The RPMs fluctuate a little while the bucking is going on. @Thompsre08, it does seem much worse at a slow easy acceleration so your description sounds identical to mine. Feels like a failing torque converter or valve body issue to me but im no transmission expert. I'll update when i hear back from them next week. Very frustrating!

Definitely keep me posted on your prognosis! My replacement transmission is acting up like the initial did.

Will do. Sorry to hear your issue is still hanging around. I'm already researching alternatives for when the warrenty runs out. But that's a loooong time from now, lol.

My thought exactly is to get another new tranny on warranty if it needs replacing and then have it built and be done with the dealerships for good
