I recently got a 2023 ram 2500 6.4l

I sold my 1500 that I used to pull my 7,500lbs camper with an estimated tongoue weight of 800-850. I havnt weighed the tongue yet, but plan to once I get a scale for the tongue.

On my 1500 I ended up having to put in progressive rate springs to handle the weight. When it was combined with a well set up WDH the truck sat really nice while towing..about 3/4" to 1/2" high in the rear and rode really well. I sold it because we were at 1550ish lbs of payload with a door sticker rating of 1700lbs max...Now the 2500 has a 3k payload and will allow me add our golf cart to the bed for our camping trips.

1500 all set up after 200 mile pull

Ive been doing a good bit of reading and it seems that folks with my tongue weight still experience a good bit of sag...potentially even enough to be a nose high truck. I know I need a new WDH as i realized that I have a 10k kitch and need a 12k hitch to be better suited for the tongue weight. But id REALLY like to not be putting a tone of weight ont he A frame by making the spring arms as tight as they were on the 1500. I may be wriong but Im horrified of breaking the A frame on the front of the camper..

Ive used sumo springs for YEARS in various appliations, but ultimatley didnt use them on the 1500 because the kit put them maybe 1/2" from the bump stops and the ride when it went out any bump was miserable. Ive read of similar experiences with the 2500 kit, making me think that maybe I can just cut one of the lumps off the sumo the create 1" to mayn 2" of space before the sponge contacts the bump stop and engages.
--> With that I was wondering if anyone has a similar weight TT and could tell me how much theirs sagged with full weight on the tongue..Mine is in storage at the moment and I wont be able to get to it for a bit.

As I travel down the rabbit hole it also lead me back to the airbag set ups. I konw NOTING about them and theyve always intimidated me to be honest...ive used the aiur lift 1000 bags in the past and like them. But I can only find a full on airbag system for the 2500.
---> By chance has any one on here instaled the airlift bags and can give me some insight?

Im more in the market research phase now since I dont intend to make a move until I can at minimum hook up the new truck to the camper and see what It looks like. But I have a storied history of over thinking these things and leaping early. So Im trying to get muy ducks in a row incase I find a sale on one of the two options that pushes me to move sooner than I hope to.

All that being said, im leaning towards the airlift bags. My major concern is that they will make the ride harsh and ai wont be able to correct it at all.

You need to adjust you wdh where you have at least a 1 inch squat on the rear of the truck. I can tell by your picture that the trailer is nose high which is bad for handling and weight distribution within the trailer. I have a 2021 ram 2500 6.4 cc long wheelbase. My trailer weighs 11,960 fully loaded for camping with another 1500 in the bed. No aftermarket equipment is needed as I am still within my max tow rating. My previous trailer weighed 9000 and I pulled it 60K before selling it. The truck never needed any help with suspension.

Fwiw using a bubble level the front of the camper was nearly dead level. The picture makes it look off though. I appreciate the insight! I found a set of timbrens on sale and grabbed em. Im hoping to be fine be fine w/o them. But it made sense to hit the sale while it was available. Im definitely a bit scared from my experience with the 1500 needing a lot of suspension work to perform

that’s not a lot of trailer for your new truck.

You’re over thinking it. There’s no reason to buy a WDH, air lift, sumos etc before you hook it up and pull it first.

I run 850-900lb tongue weight and I didnt need any assistance when my truck was stock. I did go with sumos later after I made some suspension modifications.

Same here. 900-1000 tongue weight. I don’t use a WD hitch or air bags, etc. Truck sits a hair tail high.
OP, hook it up and tow it before deciding if you need any of the other stuff.

Story of my life! Im really thinking im just scared from having to modify my jeep gladiator, and then the 1500, to pull the same camper.

Same trailer, same KOA.

Both needed a good bit of suspension work to get it to handle that camper. The entire time I’m going through these vehicles I’m telling myself I should have just gotten a 2500… So here we are.

That is very reassuring and I appreciate that. How much does it squat with that heavy tongue and no WDH?

2500 is a lot more truck than a gladdy and a good bit more than a 1500. Give her a go and see how she does

Haven’t measured it. But like I said it still sits a bit tail high. Just try hooking up and go for a short highway drive. See how it behaves.
A 2500 is substantially more truck than a Gladiator or 1500.
Really, your fears are unfounded.
