Gas Tank Size ?

The issue for me (with my 1500) is that once it is at 50 miles left and the fuel light comes on, then I can't remote start my truck. Even though there is PLENTY of gas left in the tank.

I’ll bet the pump is not calculated as taking up some volume nor are any other parts like hoses, baffles, sounding units, floats etc. All occupying volume inside that tank. That's a misconception I bet a lot of people may have, that these tanks are just a big empty tank from top to bottom and wall to wall. Think of them more as a multi section thing, with multiple interior walls (baffles), with holes of course to allow the fuel to all get to one suction point inside the tank. These baffles prevent free surface effect from the fuel sloshing around too much.

If it's anything like I'm used to on ships and tanker barges, when the tank is built as a shell it's dimensions are measured and calculated as total volume. Then the components are put in there, but the capacity on paper does not change.

So, in this case we are discussing here, RAM still advertises as a 31 gal tank.

Another reference is when you see a semi towing a tanker trailer. That is not one giant tank with what could be a swimming pool full of fuel in there. It is divided into several different sections and has lines going to each one. This allows multiple different fuels to be carried as well as prevent free surface effect from fuel sloshing all around in one giant volume. Several smaller volumes don't cause as much affect.

Factory tanks are volume measured and have no internal baffles unless things have changed even transport 100gal tanks have no baffles, i have changed tons of fuel pumps in passenger cars and trucks not one had any baffling nor does the pump take up 5 gallons at most the volume equivalent is .5of a gallon … i have built many bulk tanks ( look up satstat fueling stations) and of course added baffles…. I have also worked for shops that built tankers when i ran a service truck and i know how they are setup with partitions and baffles….

That is what I am running into now with the light coming on at 1/4. At 1/4 of a tank that is plenty.

Its slightly inconvenient, but not a big deal, for me at least. I dont really tow much, and the storage room of the megacab were worth the trade off for me. On long drives, I have pushed it to about 30 gallons on the fill up, but at 5-6 hours, that is about the range of my bladder anyway.

If I were buying a tow pig, it would have been a long bed for the increased fuel capacity.
 
I love my 19' 2500 but the tank size is my only complaint. Most of my driving is around town and am lucky if I get 275 miles between fill ups and thats with waiting till the DTE reads "low." Just put new 35" AT tires and even with some highway driving am now getting less than 250 miles between fill ups. Seems crazy to have such a big truck and get so little mileage. If an aftermarket bigger tank for the gas engine ever comes out I'd be all over it.
 
my 22 ram 2500, crew cab, 6.4 bed, laramie, cummins 4x4, takes about 23 gallons when I am at a quarter tank indicated. It also shows about 160 miles to empty when its at that point. I like to refill when I get to 1qtr tank. I am also reseraching fuel tank alternatives. Still debating between the aux tank in the bed or a bigger fuel tank replacement.

With you having the short bed i would go with a under mount replacement

There is no one making a larger replacement fuel tank for gassers.
Someone over in FB land claimed to have had this tank installed on their short bed crew cab,

 
I must be missing it. What is the capacity?
It says it fits 2021 and 2022 2500 and 3500 Rams all trims. Must just be the OEM 31 gal?
 
My understanding is you replace your cummins/fuel tank it voids warranty..... not sure if you all agree or know anything about that.
