My fuel mileage gauge will show I'm getting around 25 mpg on my way to work and then driving the same road home it may show I'm getting around 15 mpg. Is this an indication of a problem?

Its it doing a regen at the time you noticed? There are many variables

Hi DavidJ,
We're sorry to hear this is happening. If you decide to have your vehicle diagnosed by your local dealer and would like any additional assistance, feel free to send us a private message.

Could be wind, other traffic flow, elevation change...Also depending on weather the fluids might be warmer after sitting in the sun all day vs sitting overnight when it's cooler.

You probably don't have a problem.

Traffic conditions, elevation change, temp, temp. wind, and speed all factor into MPG. I just did a highway MPG test yesterday on a trip tp Tucson. It's about a 2,000 foot elevation difference from my house to Tucson over a 75-mile highway trip. Going down to Tucson was 26.8 mpg. Return home (up the hills) was 17.2 mpg. So my average highway speed yesterday was 22 MPG.

Speeds were 65 mph to/from I-10 & 75 mph on I-10 mph. Temps were 84-92 at home and 102-104 while in Tucson. Also, I reset the dash MPG (lie-o-meter) as soon as I got on the highway and noted the mpg just before getting off the highway (both directions).

Sounds like you're in deep with the skinny pedal on your drive home. I do the same.. Haha

I live on the east coast of North Carolina with hardly a hill anywhere to be found. I have an hour drive each way to work with cruise control set. The Temps may be a bit different from morning to afternoon and maybe the wind conditions might change a bit, but it doesn't seem to me like those factors should change the fuel mileage by 10 miles to the gallon...

And just to be clear, I'm not talking about actually calculating my mpg. I am only referring to what that "current mpg" reads on the dash. It will show a steady 25-26 as the current mpg and then on the same roads going home it will show 15-16 as the current mpg.

What is a regen?

assuming you have a diesel its when the engine burn more fuel to try and burn out anything clogging the dpf, if you dont have a diesel then that 25mpg is a pipe dream or your drive ti work is slightly downhill the whole way and you dont notice

There has to be a difference in uphill vs down, wind, traffic, or all of the above that make the difference. And don't put too much credit in the readout. 25-26 seems off to me, that would have to be little to no load on the engine and cruising with a tail wind.

I wouldn't worry about it personally, change the screen and stop staring at it. There is Nothing the dealer can/will do unless it is throwing a code so don't waste your time.

Thanks for all the responses. First time owning a diesel and just getting used to it...

I bought my truck on 19 December 21. It was an 65 mile trip 90 percent highway. I got 18 mpg at 70 mph, per the Lie-O-meter, from the dealership to my house. I drove the truck all week, and then took another trip to the dealership area. This time I drove at 65 mph to see what kind of mileage I would get. I ended up with 19 mpg getting there, and then I got 21 mpg getting back at the same speed. Havent refilled since they filled my tank when I bought the truck. The traffic was very similar on both full highway trips. When I tow my travel trailer about 8.5k I dont go faster than 65, mostly 60 mph. I will update the first time I tow it because i will be getting some work done on it in the next couple of weeks.

See when you are going to work you aren't very excited about that so you drive slow, hence the great mileage. When it's quitting time and you are driving home you are rollin coal to get home and thus, poor mileage...

Had you recently reset the MPG to zero? If so it may have taken a bit to catch up - the slower you drive you can keep the numbers good...probably haulin ass to get home now weren't you!
