Fuel in oil

Hey, I have a 2021 Ram 3500 with 65000 miles and I’ve had nothing but problems since I’ve gotten it. Something is always wrong with the emissions and the engine light is always going on and off. Also, now I have a problem getting diesel in the oil. Had the oil changed and it was 2.5 gal over full on a 5000 mile oil change. Took it to the Dodge place and they had me drive it another 1000 miles after they changed it to see where the oil level was. Took it back and then they put dye in the fuel and had me drive it another 1000 miles. They changed the fuel pump out and said they think fixed it and to drive it 3000 miles and bring it back. I’m on 500 miles with the new fuel pump and the oil is an inch high on dip stick so the fuel is still getting into the oil. Do I finish out the 3000 miles and take it back or call them? I’m worried about all this fuel ruining the motor especially since the engine warranty runs out at 100,000 miles. Anyone else having this problem?

Do you monitor how often your truck performs an active regen? If not you can monitor the DPF filter gauge screen and it will tell you when it enters an Active regen. From the sounds of it I bet your are tripping an engine code for frequent regens and this is causing your oil to be diluted with fuel. Each time your your truck regens, a little bit of fuel will enter the oil. Under normal operating conditions your truck should only regen every 24 hrs., this is programmed to happen automatically. Outside of the 24 hr. timed regen the truck will initiate a regen if your DPF gauges reaches I think 46%..... somewhere around there. There have been a few members on here whose trucks are constantly regenerating and also have oil dilution issues.

It would help if you could tell us how you use the truck. Do you make multiple small trips around town frequently, sit in stop and go traffic a lot, tow frequently?

When I drive it I usually drive at least 30 miles on a short trip, average days are around 80-100 mile trips (hauling cows, equipment and hay sometimes) and haul farm equipment out of state which is around 550 miles one way. Not in a whole lot of stop and go traffic but I do feel like it’s in regen a lot more than I thought it should be anyways. Sometimes when it’s in regeneration the engine light comes on too.

It sounds like you are working the truck pretty good so I don't think that is your issue. If you are able to I would start with checking all of your charge pipe connections for boost leaks. You can do this by visually inspecting for holes and ensuring all pipes are seated correctly and clamps are tightened. The best way would be to pressurize your system, there are several kits you can make in which you use an air compressor to pressurize your charge pipes, if you have a leak you will hear it.

Another thing to check is your air filter, make sure you are running an OEM filter. I have personally installed a non OEM filter (WIX) and my truck was going into regeneration every few hundred miles. The second I swapped back to a OEM filter my truck went back to only doing 24 hr. timed regens. I don't think this is your issue but I would still check to rule it out. Considering your oil level was 2.5 gallons overfilled I would be extremely concerned, you may have caused damage to the engines internal components. This is a hot topic on this forum so I am sure other members will chime in and offer more advice. Best of luck to ya.

Towing with any weight for some distance and still having frequent regeneration issues, you definitely have a problem. You sure it was 2 1/2 gallons over full? That’s damn near double the amount of oil the truck takes to fill. I’d say that now they are aware there is a problem, document everything and follow their instructions.

I’m also way over full although my dealership claims this is a “normal” level. I’m on warranty visit #4 for frequent regeneration. They have replaced the MAF and DPF after a STAR case was opened and closed. Has anyone found solutions?

Normal level to me would be in the “safe” zone. What do I know I’m not a dealership tech

I have a 2020 2500 with the 6.7, I also had over 1 gallon extra when I changed my oil at 3000 miles. After I replace the oil, I took a sample of the old oil with me to the dealer and had them look at the truck. They also did the same thing. They change the oil again and sealed up the cap, the dipstick and the plug on the pan and told me to come back in 1000 miles. I have 200 miles ago to take it in so when I do, I will reply again. My truck just had the fuel pump replaced because of the recall so I doubt if it’s the fuel pump. I am leaning more towards an O-ring on the injector. I will keep you posted.

Took it back a couple more times. They ended up saying I had water getting in my diesel and file a claim with insurance for $30,000 to fix the whole fuel system and put another set of injectors on it and I haven’t had any more problems since but I’m not 100% sure that the water getting in diesel is actually true.

Haven’t had any problems since though, thank goodness.

What you experienced is why you always buy your own UAO kit ( I use Cummins/Fleetguard kits) to send in your own oil sample so that your 100% sure the dealer is not blowing smoke up your @ss

How does the story change from diesel in oil to water in diesel?

That dealer is f***king you over big time.

I did take it back to the dealer and the oil level did go up. they have opened a star case, now I have to wait and see what they come up with. It has been there for 3 days and nothing but crickets.

I have a 2023 3500 6.7 limited Mega Cab. I got my oil changed last time at a service shop and they told me it was overfilled. After another 6000 miles I took it in for another change at another shop and they told me it was overfilled as well. That didn't seem right to me so instead of changing the oil, I took it to the dealership. I have the best warranty money can buy on this truck. My truck was not regenerating overly, and my indicator in the dash says my filter is at 0%. A warning light went off for the assisted cruise control while driving as well. I wasn't using the cruise at all. Every time I tried to accelerate, that light would go off and I would have zero power. Barely accelerate going up a hill unloaded. When they pulled the codes, it said that there was a misfire on all 6 cylinders. Also check engine light is constantly on. That code is saying faulty AGR valve. The truck itself isn't throwing any codes that can be seen on the dash.

They drained almost 5 gallons of oil from it. I think it takes around 3. Ram warranty said that there is a problem with something inside the DPF filter that can melt, and with over regeneration it can cause fuel to some how enter the oil pan???? Seemed fishy to me. They replaced the DPF filter and reset the code for the engine light. After leaving the dealership I drove 10 miles and the engine light was back on. I drove back to the dealership, they scanned the code, AGR sensor valve? So they ordered me one of those and sent me on my way.

I drove another maybe 200 miles and the same ACC cruise light came on and I lost power again. The oil level was already way over the safe zone as well. Now it's back at the dealership, it's been crickets for 3 days....

Wondering if anyone has been down this road before?

Cheers

Something in the fuel system is busted and dumping fuel into your oil, that’s more than excessive regens will cause.

yes I have the same problem. they put dye in the fuel tank and drove it then they pulled the valve cover and yes the dye was in the oil. I am taking it in next week and they are going to pull the head and pressure test for leaks.
