Doing the filter changes my self for first time. Anyone have any tips or advice before hand would be appreciated. Just bought the front and rear filters for $106 including shipping, Mopar, from dieselfiltersonline.com with 2 day shipping. Couldn’t find it any better.

Get a small bucket for the rear filter. I can prop it on the driveshaft and catch the draining fuel, and then I use it to drop the housing and filter into. No Mess. There is a drain lever on the front filter and a hose that runs down. I slip a copper tube on the hose as an extension down to my drain pan. The front filter can be a bear to get loose the first time. I use a long wobbly extension and make sure you use a six point socket. When you are ready to replace the filter covers, make sure you oil ( i actually lightly grease) the O-rings to make the process easier next time. Make sure you close the filter drains! I go through the push start button process 3 times to prime the filters. She always starts right up. Check youtube if you want a video. YMMV.

I replaced that front plastic filter cover on my 14 and bought a billet aluminum one at Genos garage much easier to take off and not worry about cracking the lid . Looks good too ! When I got my 20 it was the first thing I bought for it . About 80 to 90 bucks.

The little drain screw plug on the bottom of the rear Filter housing is very weak and can break off when you tighten it , I am looking for a better type maybe brass , any one seen one .

Never used it on my 14 . You have a drain on your front filter . I don’t think they specifically make one . But you can probably get a brass petcock at a plumbing store and a matching brass pipe to thread it into . Just weight bouncing around being held by plastic .

The rear filter on the new trucks is way different than the previous design.

On the 19’s and later the rear filter is in a plastic housing (same as the 1500) and there is a big screw off cap which is at the bottom Same size socket as the front and the cap has a small needle drain valve make out of plastic With a oil ring and its very thin , mine broke as I screwed it in with my fingers ,its about 1/4” thick , it only seems to drains about a 1/4 of the diesel in the filter Because when you unscrew the cap a lot flows out every where unless you have a very large mouth funnel.

Keep your drain hose connected and the valve opened as you loosen the canister. As soon as it breaks vacuum, stop and let it drain. Much, much less mess.
