I hate do gooders. I don’t need you to lock me out for my safety..

24 Laramie UC 12” screen. Never tried the navigation before so I’m driving somewhere but I cannot type (or find a button to speak) the address in “for my safety the keyboard is disabled”. Well that navigation tool is worthless, popped open the iPhone and typed (illegally, might I add) and that worked.

Why does a 60k truck have to control my life with safety ???

Anyone find a way around this because this isn’t good ?

Everyone thinks they are a good enough driver to do it safely and yet people are killed or permanently maimed every day by inattentive drivers. No one ever woke up and said “I’m going to be responsible for someone’s death today”, and yet it happens all the time. That feature isn’t for your safety, it’s for mine.

I’m all for locking out the driver’s phone, except for hands free calling, when it senses motion greater than 10 MPH.

I love the features that keep drivers coming toward me on the road from doing things like typing when they should be driving. Everyone thinks they are a good enough driver to do it safely and yet people are killed or permanently maimed every day by inattentive drivers. No one ever woke up and said “I’m going to be responsible for someone’s death today”, and yet it happens all the time. That feature isn’t for your safety, it’s for mine.

So let me ask you….why did my MDC (mobile data computer) work on patrol so I could run plates, type to my partners? That wasn’t locked out while driving..

My phone works and is likely a bigger distraction than the screen on the truck. So a blocked keyboard on a UC really is a do gooder garbage feature to just help Stellantis from a lawsuit- they could care less if someone dies on the road.

Ok, the same but not the same. Driving down the interstate on my commute home from work yesterday, in front of me is a little car speeding up, slowing down and going from side to side in the lane they’re in. I get up beside them and it’s a young kid TEXTING on his phone. Those are the type of people that’s geared towards, unfortunately you just can’t fix stupid.

My phone works and is likely a bigger distraction than the screen on the truck. So a blocked keyboard on a UC really is a do gooder garbage feature to just help Stellantis from a lawsuit- they could care less if someone dies on the road.

I would suggest that officers ARE better drivers because of all of your experience. Driving was part of your job. The “no type“ feature is geared to the majority of drivers who are not in that category. I have 56 years of driving experience and have never caused an accident, but I know my driving is not up to top tier if I’m fussing with the radio. If the unexpected happened somewhere around me, I would be slower in responding. 99.999% of the time, nothing will happen. But that last 0.001% could be a doozy. As we move from single purpose buttons that you don’t have to look at to press, to menus on displays, it gets worse. I have also had a moment of frustration when I couldn’t enter an address into our 3500 while driving. I guess I’m old enough to realize that my time isn’t important enough to not pull over and do it while stopped.

I was able to kill the navigation nanny in my F350. There are times, as I'm driving down the road, I would like my navigator (wife) to enter a destination into the nav but she can't. If I have to stop the vehicle for it to be entered I may as well do it myself.
I recall a GPS unit in a past vehicle that would display a screen that said "I am not the driver of this vehicle" or words to that effect. Tapping the "confirm" button then allowed the destination to be entered.

So yes, if I could AlfaOBD this navigation nanny out of existence, I would do it in a heartbeat!

Hence the reason I like my Garmin RV 785 navigator. I actually did buy it when I started towing RVs, but it has two profiles in it for the RV and every day driving. Which I always have it on with the built in dash cam when I'm driving. But the best thing is, I can say "Hey Garmin" and it responds to my voice commands. This includes addresses for navigation, finding Points of Interest, etc. My Ram is a nonNav version, however the wireless Android Auto also has voice commands. Just sayimg.

What's frustrating is my wife as the passenger can't type in an address. What if we're in motion and all of a sudden, we're hungry, have to find a rest stop, or whatever. It makes it difficult for my navigator because the truck is moving.

Yet you can type it in on your phone, so blocking the dash keyboard has actually made it more dangerous by forcing mobile input to the phone. The workaround is likely to cause far more mishaps than the “cure”.

It probably should be as well, call it in to dispatch on the radio or wait until the individual is stopped? I've almost been hit twice by distracted driving police cruisers.

If you ever work for a police department you’ll discover that officers are not better drivers!
