I have a 2021 Ram 2500, Mega Cab, Cummins.

I am finding that I am going through quite a bit of DEF fluid. I get about 3,500km (2,100 mil) per DEF tank.

I had a 2019 Ram 2500, Mega Cab, Cummins with the same problem, however, with that truck, I was LUCKY to get 2,500km (1500 mil) per DEF tank and every time I'd come off the highway it would go into re-gen. The dealership looked at it 12 times, each time they "flashed it" and finally sent it to "engineering".

I'm worried about my 2021 having the same issues. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is and how to fix? Thanks in advance.

Thats pretty normal these trucks run hot not like the 13-18 trucks that would last forever on a tank of DEF so they need to use more DEF to reduce the NOX

Damn, that's disappointing. The dealer couldn't even tell me that.

I was basing my DEF mileage off my buddy's 2016 2500; he was getting around 16,000 km (10,000 mil) per DEF tank.

Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

My salesman told me 5K/tank. I kinda figured he was pulling that number out of his butt. On the machines I work on , DEF usage ranges from 2%-8% depending on operation. That's about the range I've seen so far with mine.

I sometime feel like I burn more DEF than deisel.

My average over 2 years has been 365 MPG. 80% towing.
That seems like a whole lot better than mine. What does that translate to in terms of miles per DEF tank? It's easier for me to get a better idea that way. Thanks.

I don't blame you. I want to do the same, but I'm stuck between doing it now or waiting for the warranty to expire; which is a ways away. I'm at 17,780km so far.
Thankfully I haven't had any ice up issues.

In that case, I'm going to start looking into it sooner than later.
I don't have the time to keep taking it in.

I just got another derate on my way home from work its going back again on tuesday… last time was 2 weeks ago…

Oh man. Thankfully I have never had that problem. Best of luck with it.

I usually took on a half tank of def every 60-70 gallon fill up. Which was daily with a 45 external tank. But that was pulling upwards of 15k lbs on a 10k trailer. So not sure how that figures in. Not pulling the trailer anymore and have all the seats in the truck. So time to start watching def usage for regular driving.

So far I'm getting ~450-500 miles per gallon of DEF. Haven't towed anything with it yet.

My 2021 3500 4x4 HO SB CC averages 648 MPG when empty, and around 300 MPG when towing my 5th wheel. I have a bit over 13,000 miles on the truck now.
