El Barto’s Power Wagon

Good luck! I can confirm the CD player will fit, unless they did something strange to that console.

It looks like the wiring loom is mfg in March 2019 (kind of surprising since the donor vehicle was a MY2020), I’m sure the CD player will physically fit, I’m not sure how it will work from a wiring perspective. I also don’t know if I really care to retain the CD player.

My truck is a 2019 so hopefully that means things play nicely since 2020 is Uconnect 4 as well, right?

It looks like there is an extra USB plug (male) dangling in the back of the console. Anyone know if this is normal?

I have to guess they replaced the console at some point, and transferred the wiring over? But why?!

That USB should likely be plugged into the rear (back seat) connection module or the armrest I’d think.

Perhaps…I cannot see where it connects to, I will have to take the back section off (will need to do this anyways to strip this thing down as much as possible to make it easier to make the modifying cuts for the floor shifter)

I got the back panel off, not seeing anything to plug the USB into. The little usb hub and the harness to the armrest usb just have regular automotive connectors. I wonder if it’s on the harness for some versions that have the 3rd media usb hub on the back (vs charge only)…on eBay they have 2 usb connections though so idk…

Stripped down. Less pieces to get damaged during the process of cutting and test fitting for the shifter, and lighter/smaller to make it easier to handle (About 20lbs as shown vs 40lbs fully dressed!). Surprisingly easy to disassemble, didn’t break any clips.

I’ll probably partially reassemble it to plug things in/test functionality before committing to cutting.

Alright here we go. Kind of a big project:
I’m going to try to swap in the full length center console. The bench seat and floor shifter are cool and retro, but not the best use of space. The jump seat does not enough leg room for an adult to fit (nor do I ever need the 6th seat). The CD player under the bench seat is difficult to access. I currently have the floor console I retrofit from a 4th gen, and it made the console are a bit better, but the full floor console in the 4.5gen HD/5thGen 1500 is well regarded since it has a ton of space, so I want to swap that in.

I intend to still keep the floor shifter, which is going to be the big challenge of this project. I’ve seen it done on 4th gen trucks, where the floor shifter sticks up thru the side panel with a bit of trimming. It may be tricky, the pocket is not as big as I thought, and there are wiring harnesses and the hvac ducting right below.

I bought the console on eBay. It’s from a Laramie , has the RamCharger queries phone charger and 115V power outlets.

It seems to have come from a truck that was built for “Chrysler ASG” (Automotive Sciences Group) as a test mule, based on the VIN build sheet lookup. It’s from a regular Laramie L2, but it appears to have the Laramie night edition side trim panels (dark grey, chrome accent), and the rear has the Power Wagon black chrome trim, but regular Laramie wood trim. At some point I may try to swap the wood trim and the side panels for “correct” power wagon pieces to match my truck. It doesn’t look too bad as is though. It also appears some of the parts of the console were installed in mid 2022 (due to early 2022 mfg date stickers/stamps), but the truck was a MY2020; and some of the parts, such as wiring harnesses have mfg dates from late 2019. Definitely unique back story on the donor truck.

I believe I can relocate my CD player from under the jump seat into this console, but I’m not sure if I will. I don’t really listen to CDs often, and the extra cubby is neat. I am also not sure if I’ll try to get the RamCharger wireless charger working or not, it doesn’t seem like something I’ll ever really use. I do want all the USBs and 115V outlets to function

I'm following closely - I want to do the same thing. What I really want is a steel safe in the center. I can't believe that no one makes one as a replacement for the jump seat. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

There are some metal center consoles available designed for police/fire use, I don’t think they are a locking safe though.
Console Vault sells metal safe inserts for the OEM console as well as the RamBin, but they aren’t very big.

Anyways, things will be moving a bit slower on this project while I wait for more parts, as well as having a busy couple of weeks ahead. I just wanted to get this console on hand so I could start measuring and developing a game plan.

Yeah, I saw those Console Vault inserts, and there is a similar product (less burly but at a lower price point) from Tuffy, but you have to put in the console first! Like you, I've got the jump seat.

I also don't have the Ram bins, because I have a Tradesman (with the PW package). It looks like I have the cut-outs for the Ram bins though, so I might pop those out, and install some sort of locking storage there. Tuffy also makes a lockable Ram bin: Ram Bin Locking Storage from Tuffy.

I'll look for those police/fire center consoles, but if you have a link already, please send it my way.

It just seems strange that there isn't a relatively easy way to remove the jump seat and replace it with locking storage. I mean... who doesn't like locking storage? I live in western Colorado now, but when I lived on the Front Range, all the popular trailheads had a major problem with smash and grab. Everyone who parked there was out running or biking, having left their wallet, phone, etc. in the car. Douche bag delinquents would break a window, grab what they could, and be gone in 30 seconds.

So finally got the OEM truck bed lights wired in and programmed, despite having installed the lights and run the wires 5 years ago. That was an option I wanted from the factory, but ended up buying a truck the dealer already had on order rather than doing a custom order.

I figured if I’ll have the front seats removed for the center console project (to remove the jump seat), I might as well take this opportunity to complete the other factory option I would have opted for if I had done a custom build on my truck: vinyl flooring rather than carpet.
I have the OEM all weather mats, but dirt and dog fur still finds its way under them and it’s a pain to clean when it weaves its way into the carpet; and there are exposed spots next to / under the seats that collect dog fur and dirt as well. Vinyl is a bit easier to clean than carpet, and won’t absorb water if it gets wet
Nice thing about the 2019+ vinyl floor is it has the tabs for the OEM floor mats just like the carpet floor, unlike traditional vinyl floors which do not. Double rubbers. It has foam insulation on the bottom so it dont think it will make the cab any louder.

Got the vinyl flooring installed. After handling the carpet and the vinyl flooring, the vinyl is much thinner and while it has some foam and some structure not as much as the carpet. That did make it a fair bit easier to install than I’m sure the carpet would be. I’m not sure how much louder the cab will be, I assume it will be fairly negligible difference though. It should be easier to clean under the seats and under the mats. If they do get wet they won’t absorb the moisture. I think the vinyl looks good, though it mostly gets covered by the OEM floor liners; there is a crease in the middle from how it was packaged, but it’s covered by the floor mats and will probably (hopefully) flatten out over time.

Seats out, you can see all the dog fur, dirt, and crumbs under the seat that are difficult to clean (even with seats out they didn’t want to come clean with the vacuum)

Buttoned up, no jump seat though so I can (hopefully) put in the full console

Busy couple of months so I didn’t get to start figuring out the console. Before I start cutting, I wanted to make sure things would work, electronically, so I dragged the console out into the truck and plugged things in.
Good news / Bad news.

Good news: I plugged things in and the front USB worked , CarPlay worked , armrest charge-only usb worked, and both front and rear 115V outlets worked.

Bad news: Rear USB does not work, wireless charger does not work. Shifter is going to be a problem.

Ugly: LED light on the front 115V outlet doesn’t work. CarPlay works, but I think source is showing up as aux? I didn’t notice this until looking at pictures later.

The wireless charger not working wasn’t a huge surprise. I was hoping activating in AlfaOBD would be all I needed, but either I’m doing it wrong or it needs hardwiring … which I don’t care enough about this feature to bother with.

The rear USB not working is the big, bad surprise. I am suspecting/hoping it’s just the little usb media box is dead and needs replaced, since everything else at the rear of the console worked.

Shifter, not surprisingly, is going to be a pain. Someone said they just bent it, but it seems the hvac duct goes right over the shifter, so I don’t think that will work. I think making a custom shifter that is offset will be the way.
The little LED on the front 115V outlet not working is a bummer, but at least the outlet works. I think it’s the same module as the one that came on my truck, so I may just try and swap them when I do the final install.

CarPlay seems to work, which was my biggest fear. I noticed, looking at photos after putting everything back, that it was showing the media source as AUX though? Maybe I didn’t actually have any music playing when I took the photo. I also plugged the grey usb into the console, I may have to try the black one instead.
