Hey everyone, it's been a while. I've got a 2020 RAM 3500 6.7l HO with about 46k miles on it now. Took it in for yearly maintenance and it had popped a CEL just before so I had them look at it. Dealer (took it there because of extended warranty) is saying I have a clogged DPF and need a new one plus sensors to the tune of $6800. Seems a bit excessive. I don't know enough about the DPF system to be able to make an educated decision about this, but figured I'd take it to an independent diesel shop before going any further. This seems like a design flaw if I can break such an expensive system so quickly and since it's not covered under the warranty that tells me they know it's gonna break. I guess I'm just at a loss for what to do here.

Ask the dealer to do a stationary de-soot and if the code clears run a tank of Archoil 6400 preferably while towing.

I feel like your emissions warranty of 8 years/80k miles would still be in tact.

The emissions warranty is 5/50K, so it depends on when it was initially purchased.

You need to fight the "not covered under warranty" BS, It absolutley should be, especially with an extended warranty.

Maintenance items, including "filters" which include the DPF are not covered under Maxcare extended warranty.

If anything, Federal 5/50K or CARB 8/80K Emissions warranty might cover.

I'd ask Granger to show you that in a contract specific to RAM HD Diesel... That's simply not what they are on HD diesel trucks.

Yeah, looks like differing info all over the place. That was a Ram website I posted.

I haven't looked at my owners material, but now im curious. I'll have a peek.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised they cant get their comms aligned over various company-sponsored websites and printed materials SMH.

That was a Ram dealership’s site, not a Ram site.

Granger Motors is one of the bigger sellers of the Mopar extended warranty, so they should be able to get it right.

Granger is also a site vendor on 5thgenrams, a big competitor to Mark Dodge for mid-central buyers, and fairly recently a huge sponsor on TFL.

Perhaps @zach@granger should look into the accuracy of their web site.

(While paying vendors get a pass on advertising here without needing to ask first since there's no official membership system in place here yet, Zach was polite and professional enough to ask first regardless.)

Thanks for the tips and information, everyone. I appreciate the insight. In the end I was 3 days out of warranty, naturally. Thankfully they agreed to cover it as an act of goodwill, so color me surprised. I'll use the Archoil additives from now on, that's for sure.

Looks like that 8/80 is only if you have their warranty maybe?

"Ram’s Federal Emissions Warranty typically lasts for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first, for certain critical components. Other emissions-related parts are often covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles. The duration of coverage can vary depending on your truck’s engine and configuration, but the emissions warranty offers robust protection throughout the early life of your vehicle."

But at any rate if I was out of warranty I would look at having the DPF re-cored.

The Mopar extended warranties don’t cover the DPF, only the original warranty.

Its not very clear, but it looks like the 8/80 federal mandated emissions warranty only covers certain items and for trucks under 8500 GVWR.

However, my manual has this:

There are many other states that have adopted CARB this applies to, or will apply in coming years. A few (MA, OR) started for MY 2025 HD trucks.

There is no extended warranty available that covers emissions equipment. Tells you everything you need to know about this stuff. It’s not a matter of if but when it will fail.
