I thought I read not to use DEF that was past the experation date......is this correct?
I picked up a jug of TECH from Wally World and it had a 09/19/2020 on the label.
Probably trivial, but I am truly just a very new person needing to learn.
Thanks all.

Yes. I would not use it. Also temperature impacts life span for DEF. Higher temp = shorter life.

That date is probably the made-on date, not the expiration date. DEF is good for about 3 years if stored properly or less than a year if stored improperly. Then, of course, add the time it will be in your DEF tank in much less than ideal conditions. Regardless, that jug is 5 months old (at the time of this post) and I'd avoid it. The Blue DEF I buy for mine is usually less than a month old when I get it.

It gets a little confusing for sure. If the date you reference is the made on date, then may not be a problem. I would watch a few YouTube videos explaining how to read the dates, (reverse Julian) and all that. Then you can decide for yourself. I think if it is really only 5 months old, then maybe ok, especially at this cooler time of year. But as I said it is confusing without actually seeing the box and the date code. The general consensus seems to be buy as fresh as possible like Badunit said. Then store properly and use as soon as possible. It really is something how the DEF system in the truck and the DEF itself is so sensitive. But it really does seem from my research on it that the fresher the better. And do not get any contamination at all into the tank.

You can see here a package date and an expiration date of 2 years from package date. Depends if the date you see is the package date or not (I'd guess it is)

My father inlaw had a couple skids at work one skid was getting cloudy at 40 weeks he called the distributer they said 32 weeks is about as long as you want to keep it for even at the proper temp they call for

My father has a 100hp new Holland tractor with def. he rarely uses it and left it sit for about 8 months. He went to run it to cut hay in the spring and it went into limp mode until he flushed the def tank, crazy pain in the a

The Urea in it likely dissipates at which point it's mostly water and the sensor is thinking you're trying to fool it by filling with straight water. It probably is some type of conductivity sensor. I'll have to take some fresh and expired samples to work one day and run some tests on it to see if I can find a difference in alkalinity, conductivity, pH...etc.

2 years is far to long anything after 32 weeks is to much
