Do most of you guys do your own maintenance?

I DIY whatever is possible & within reason.. I can remember helping dad repack the bearings on his old '49 Plymouth when I was 6 or 7. I've torn apart engines and put them back together. Installed a few suspension lifts. As long as I can deem it worthy of my time an effort. In the mid to late 90s I was an ASE certified dealership flunky. But I saw too many things go down. Taking your vehicle to the dealership is like Reject Roulette! While there's lots of winners there, you never really know where your rigs gonna end up.

On my vehicles I do everything unless it's some kind of major warranty problem. Even if it was warranty and not very expensive I'd just change it. That way there is less chance the dealership f's something else up in the process or keeps it for weeks on end.

That looks like it isn’t too old, what’s the story there?

I keep hearing that Toyota's never need a repair... WTH happened?
Normal maintenance at first, has 120k and timing belt was never done, did a full gasket kit, timing belt and two pulleys were noisey. Left original valve still seals because they are a total pain. 7 months later, loud knocking noise in driver head, and smoking like bob marley upon start up. Valve stem seal went bad so tore apart to replace all. Also, the drivers head wasn’t getting oil. It was before, as I checked the pressures after rebuild. Checked pressure and it had none, not sure of the cause so complete tear down again. Block had 80-90psi of pressure at idle and it’s supposed to be roughly 10-20, and a max around 45 at WOT. Found nothing wrong though, did another gasket kit and it’s been fine since. Only thing I can think of is there was a small piece of something that stayed in the motor and finally worked loose and blocked the oil passage to head.

A lot can be done to vehicles though with simple hand tools and a chilton and Haynes manual….it’s alot less complicated than people think. Plus with the internet, a lot can be accomplished.

View attachment 28878All on my own…warranty work, dealer will get one chance then it’s back to my issue. I’ve been around the block a time or two….
I hate working on Subaru's. Helped a buddy replace the engine in his 2017 WRX last year, and rebuilt the EJ25 in my Forester XT this year. I don't know why I like to torture myself with them.

I will say if someone has to swap or pull a Subaru motor, they are probably the easiest I’ve done for being a “newer” vehicle

Non turbo Subarus are a cake walk. Anything turbo or flat-6, not so much.

I do all my own maintenance as well as mods etc. I am out of warranty so everything is on me now any way. Obviously there are going to be things just too big to tackle at home but I can handle most of it. I actually find it therapeutic ... to the point when the wrenches and curse words start flying Lol

I do all the "upgrades" to the wife's jeep as well. Bumpers, lifts, winches, steps etc.

That sounds nice. Do you have a lift? It just seems like a pain to get this big thing totally off the ground to rotate the tires. But that is a good point, I don't like the idea of them messing up the wheels or anything.

So when you do have to bring them in, do you tend to go to independent shops over dealerships? Or let dealerships handle warranty work?

I have 2 three ton Floor Jacks I use when rotating my tires. Left side first the right side.

It is not bad not troublesome for me to do this.
