Honestly, it doesn't seem like there is that much to do besides oil changes every 5k or so, or whenever the EVIC tells you to. I have always done that myself to most of my cars but then sometimes would let the dealer do it when they had cheap oil changes. I still prefer to do it myself because then I know it is done right and I don't get oil all over, and at least now while this truck is new, I would rather nobody else touch it for a while! I guess other than oil, there are other fluids that are not due for a while. I mean, I guess overall, I have only been to a mechanic when I had something major wrong, or to do the brakes or something when I don't feel like doing them. I don't really want to rotate the tires though, or have any means to do that, so maybe I can bring that to Discount. So I guess what I am saying is, is there really any reason to bring it to a dealer or other mechanic except for warranty work or anything else wrong?

I do oil changes and diff changes and brakes and about every other routine maintenance item. I always do my own rotations as I do not trust somebody else messing with my nuts :) I have a nice garage to work in and it has heat so even in the winter it is a good place to be.

That sounds nice. Do you have a lift? It just seems like a pain to get this big thing totally off the ground to rotate the tires. But that is a good point, I don't like the idea of them messing up the wheels or anything.

So when you do have to bring them in, do you tend to go to independent shops over dealerships? Or let dealerships handle warranty work?

Same here. I tried to do whatever not covered under warranty. The basics are simple. Oil, fuel filters ands brakes. Just have a big oil catch pan or it could be messy.

Ok..I guess all the old basics are the same as they always have been which I have done. And I suppose as long as you save the receipts, you are ok as far as any warranty questions, right? Anything beyond the basics or anything major, I better not mess with it! But then again, I won't have to worry about that for a while anyways because this forum has helped me feel good about getting a MaxCare since it is not too expensive.

no lift I have a floor jack and use jackstands. I have been lucky I have had very few warranty issues since buying my first new vehicle in 1977. I would only use dealership for warranty work tho.

DIY except warranty issues. I don’t trust anyone to do it right, if I **** it up I’ve got no one to blame but myself.
Tires, I take it to Discount Tire for that, they can balance when they rotate, and it’s the one thing I’m willing to be lazy with

I use DT as well, love them. But even with an appt, here, you’re in there over an hour for a rotate. They’re just so busy.

Other than warranty work I do it all myself. But I have the tools and can do it at work in our shop. Perks of being a mechanic.

I actually just let the dealer change my oil (they use PUP) and rotate the sneakers the other day. Essentially it cost me $5 (after pricing PUP and the filter) for them to do the rotate, which I can't do right now being on light duty. Typically I do my own maintenance work having everything but the lift.

I do my own maintenance on all vehicles and equipment. Nothing like some good tunes and some quality time with my truck in the garage. I Take my time and do it right.
