DEF - What brand do you use?

i bougt a 55 gallon drum of the Kleen brand, have had no issues. I store it in my warehouse and just pump out what i need when i need it.
I bought one of those cheap siphon style drum pumps tp pump it from the drum into a 2 gallon jug that i pour into the truck, works great.

All DEF must meet ISO 22241, which specifies it must have the same urea concentration across the board, and a maximum PPM of impurities. If it does not meet the minimum requirements it can not be marketed as DEF. If the container has API logo on it, it's good to go since in order to get the API logo it must meet the ISO 22241 standard. You can pay more if you want, but you're getting literally nothing more for your money.

Better box, maybe a better spout.

Been running the cheapest Supertech up until recently when supply dwindled. Regular Blue Def (2nd cheapest) since.

DEF is manufactured to a spec, right? None of the fancy box brands are adding anything to it, right?

Here are a couple of links that will show you one manufacturer supplies many brands with their DEF.

The first link is to manufacturers in general. DEF Manufacturers

The second link is a list of brands manufactured by one company. Old World Industries List of Brands

Interesting to see that the same company makes the DEF under various labels such as Blue DEF, Blue DEF Platinum, KleenDEF, Carquest DEF and the list goes on. One company, same specs, you can decide if there is any reason to pay for the marketing when the product is the same and meets the federal standards for our truck.

Thanks for those links. Looks like I can switch between a few different places and still get DEF made by Old World Industries. Do all the brands that Old World Industries produces use the same format for their date code? To me that is important so as to get fresher product.

Main thing I look for more than brand, is the date code
I read recently that DEF actually has a very short shelf life at warmer temps. Now it's cooled down a lot I've bought a couple of boxes to 'keep in stock' but during the summer I'd get down to 1/4 tank before buying more. I forget the quoted figures but in the 80s/90s the shelf life is weeks.

If it's not stored in direct sunlight it should be good for a year. Ambient temps in the 90s aren't going to raise the temp of the DEF that high unless stored directly in the sun.

I worry more about it freezing in the tank in the dead of winter so I tend to keep it lower in case it needs to thaw or have some added to help defrost. It's also known that overfilling can cause DEF level codes and errors so I only ever add a 2.5gal jug when it's 1/4 or below.

I know the truck will still run with a frozen def block, and there's a heater in the tank, but that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Wouldn't keeping more def in the tank reduce the chances that it will freeze?

Probably. Lesser of two evils if it did freeze a larger volume. It will take less time to thaw.

I’ve had plenty of Arizona trips to visit in laws and summer is hell!!

Agree - truck will start up and run and the tank heater will thaw it pretty quickly. I get worried about what happens when the DEF expands when the tank is full and it freezes. Does it crack or break something?

Hi All... In reading through many posts it seems that there is very little care about DEF brand. I am new to the DEF need, and came from the 2004.5 Duramax. It was a hard decision to come to the RAM line as I have been a Chevy truck guy all of my life. In switching brands, I now am learning how to work with and whether to trust a new dealership. The jury is still out on my feelings about them, and that is why i am commenting in this thread.

My sales guy went out of his way to make sure I knew to use the Mopar brand DEF. He claimed that they have seen several issues with the DEF crystalizing in the lines, plugging up the system. He claims in every case it was from the owner using cheap DEF fluid. He gave me the "I absolutely don't care if you purchase it here" line, but be sure to only use Mopar brand DEF. He further stated "We have not had one truck have an issue that was using Mopar brand"....

Ok, i know a line when i hear it, but has anyone heard of this crystalizing issue from using non mopar brand DEF?

Thanks for any insight you may have!
