Daily Driver - Issues without being deleted?

Nope it has nothing to do with that its the ultra sonic sensors and piss poor heater… i have discussed it in length at the dealershit talking about the common failure points also at -40 ambient temp plus the windchill of driving 65-70mph there is 0 chance of the little wrinky dink heater thawing any usable amount of DEF out so it just forms crystals on everything… who ever thought ulrasonic level sensor was a good idea is an idiot
I’m sure glad I live in Florida

I'm new to the diesel game. I have 13k on mine and just had my first engine code ( p24b0-00, PM sensor low voltage )

I'll start off by saying that I haven't towed in 4 months. I was just getting ready for a 1500 mile run, when the code came on.

My buddy scanned it and instead of him clearing it, I took it to the dealer.

Dealer says he cant find anything wrong and says it has very good runs recorded, so they clear it and test run it.

I pick it up and the code comes back in less than 1 mile.

They had it for 2 days and they called me Friday night. They say the sensor is bad and that they are backordered for over a month.

I did ask If they could force a regen and they said that the sensor issue would not let that happen.

I get to pick up my truck tomorrow. They said the code will come back and sooner or later it will go into limp mode.

So basically I cant do much with my truck.

Like I said, I'm new to diesels and have been doing my best to read as much as possible to learn how to take care of these engines.

I have watched the DPF gauge and I've never seen it move off zero and I dont believe its ever regened.

Maybe I screwed up not taking it on a good trip for such a long period and the sensor failed? Not sure at this point.

:(

Nope you did nothing wrong its these garbage emmisions systems that are so sensitive

Well that's no bueno. How many miles on your truck?

I just broke 10k miles on my '21. .... no codes or issues (yet!).

What's the code for? DEF issues??

Can't you get a loaner truck from the dealership until the issue is fixed? My wife had a Toyota loaner from Toyota for 2 month since a part was on backorder.
You should be able to get a comparable vehicle? Isn't that reasonable? Or at least give you a credit to rent a truck?

Not how it works for most domestic brands

Here's the scoop. Dealership asked if I wanted to take my truck home or leave it. He also gave me a phone # for FCA and told me to call and tell them what's going on with the truck and that he had ordered the part. He said if I call they will expedite the part.

That being said, I chose to take it home. I really didn't want my truck sitting out for possibly 2 months waiting for parts.

I called FCA and they opened a case #. They said I should get a call in a couple of days and I can talk to them about a loaner and also hear about part status.
The hic-up maybe the part where I took the truck home. They like to see the truck at the dealership when giving out loaners.

I guess I'll see what happens.

Problems like ^ are what I was worried about. I did end up ordering a Ford 7.3 but may change to a Ram 6.7 if I can get my mind around a delete/tune that would work. I'm a mechanical dude but don't know much about diesels in general. For now, I am happy with the thought of a 7.3.

my neighbor just got a 7.3 and he just got back from towing his camper 4000 miles from Montana to New Mexico and back and he said he averaged 8.5 mpg for the entire trip. he said he towed all but maybe 400 miles total in the month + he was gone. he said he drove at least the speed limits and some times faster. He said he was not disappointed in the power at all and he has previously owned a RAM diesel. he said mpg was pretty similar while towing. I have spent time in his truck and compared to my 6.4 hemi it is much nicer power plant. He ordered his with 4.30 gears which was a good choice for sure.

@jadmt Thanks for the reply! I recently sold my 2020 Power Wagon (6.4) in favor of the 7.3 Really appreciate hearing your opinion! I ordered the 4.30s as well.

How heavy was his camper?? Must be pretty heavy if he was getting this bad of a milege with his diesel RAM.

I think the main problem is the back order of parts.

I mean, sh!t happens to new trucks/cars. I'm not upset about the truck needing a part, it's the wait and not being able to use it.

I think if it was possible I would take the tank down and if there is enough room wrap it in an insulating material . They do make stick on heat pads that are used in Rv's to keep the water tank and the gray tanks from freezing. It doesn't look like it would hard to adapt to a DEF tank . Check out E trailer or other RV supply. They work on 12 volt .

The issue is how it sits inside the crossmember so a heating pad from the bottom is not an option from what i can see nor is wrapping it

My 14K lb Grand Design 311BHS gets me to a consistant 8 MPG with a S.O. 4.10 truck.
The same 5th wheel on my 2019 6.4L Hemi 3.73 truck.... 7.5 MPG.

Let me tell you, that $10K dollar was really worth it... NOT. The 6.4L pulled it, the track steer, the tractor and rented excavators just fine. I needed the payload for the camper so traded to a 1 ton duall Cummins thinking what the heck, lets spend it all and gain some noticeable fuel economy. Nope. The Hemi and the Cummins both seem to float around 15 MPG empty around town, both get about the same economy towing but one cost me 10K more in an optional engine that has half of it's owners paniking in fear of the dreaded federal emissions crap.

If I wer doing it again, it would be the Ford 7.3 or the Hemi. I really love the Ford 7.3 and Superduty exterior, but I really love the Ram interior... and that is where I spend my time when using the truck. Tough call.20210409_092741.jpg20210807_182728.jpg

^I wonder if switching to a dual rear wheel rig contributes to your lower than normal mileage on the diesel. It seems like you are getting around 3mpg lower than what most folks report. Your hemi also seems to get better than typical mileage... I typically hear numbers of 11 to 14.
